Listen to this podcast to learn about an exciting opportunity for your students to make videos that address the Obama Administration.

David Cole from the Pearson Foundation and Paul Oh from the National Writing Project joined us on this episode on Teachers Teaching Teachers. We invited them to talk about the latest iteration of the Letters to the Next President project that involves video.

Letters to the Next President: The Video Campaign Encourages Teen Filmmakers to Address Obama Administration - National Writing Project

Letters to the Next President: The Video Campaign, sponsored by the Pearson Foundation and the National Writing Project (NWP), encourages filmmakers ages 13–18, with the support of their teachers, to voice their points of view by creating and sharing digital videos about the issues they want President Obama and his new administration to address.

The video campaign extends the popular Letters to the Next President letter-writing campaign launched in 2008 by NWP and Google Docs, which engaged over 6,500 high school and middle school students across the United States, as well as the hundreds of teachers and mentors who guided them. Students identified topics that reflected their specific personal, regional, and age-related interests, and with the help of Google Docs published their work online for their peers, parents, and the public on the Letters to the Next President: Writing Our Future website: www.letters2president.org.

The new initiative is open to all young people whose teachers register their class to participate. The deadline for registration is March 27, 2009. Full registration and publication guidelines can be found at www.digitalartsalliance.org. In early April, participating teachers will be able to upload their students’ videos and publish them for the global community. The complete collection of student work will be posted at www.digitalartsalliance.org and www.letters2president.org.

Do you work with schools globally? Or want to?

The teachers whose students use Youth Voices -- and meet each week on this webcast -- often talk about “taking it global.” And this is a key value advocated by Jeff Lebow.

The idea for this webcast came when a teacher new to our work together contacted us saying that she was thinking of having her students get involved with both Youth Voices and Taking it Global (TIG). This teacher, Melissa Lynn Pomerantz, a 10 grade English teacher from St. Louis joined us on the show.

Teachers Teaching Teachers #141 - VoiceThread Update with Ben and Steve along with Bill, Mattie, Mary Ellen & Colette - 02.25.09

Do you use VoiceThread? Many of us do, and as we grow with this application in our classrooms, it’s great to know that the founders are still there with us, listening and improving their tool.

Perhaps you also received an email from the VoiceThread team earlier this month. Upon their release of “a major update to our Groups feature and want to share how it works and what it means for everyday VoiceThreaders.” They go on to explain that the improvements mean that groups are “persistent,” “borderless,” and “simple.” And they did profide “a Thread showing what’s new and how to use it.” http://voicethread.com/share/343705/.

Fair enough, but this made Susan Ettenheim and Paul Allison feel the need for more conversation! We asked Steve Muth and Ben Papell to join us on Teachers Teaching Teachers February 25.

Teachers Teaching Teachers #140 - Looking to the Future with Sheri Edwards and Matt Montagne - 02.18.09

Sheri Edwards and Matt Montagne joined Paul Allison and Susan Ettenheim on this podcast.

Sheri has been teaching for decades at the Nespelem School, a public school located on the Colville Indian Reservation in Nespelem in the state of Washington, USA. They have 139 students in grades preschool through grade eight.

Sheri is involved in so much that her remarks in this podcast can only be considered an brief introduction to the rich resource that can be found in her work.

We are delighted that some of her students have begun to publish in Youth Voices. For example, west31 writes: "I think wrestling is very competitive and fun because you get to flop people around, show your skills an quickness. Also you don't always use your strength for wrestling, you use smarts against your opponents.

This is why I think wrestling is fun and competitive.  What do like about wrestling?  What techniques do you use?" Wrestling is fun and Competitive.
