21:13:58  sharonp  : thanks Vince, my next point

21:14:56  sharonp  : this might be a good topic for Diane to contribute - about the edubloggercon - Graham Wegner's blog post about olympics effect theory

 21:15:16  JenniferW  : http://thejournal.com/articles/17325

21:15:33  sharonp  : I know Diane is Canadian and I know she was at the edubloggercon (thanks for introducing yourself to me!)

 21:19:13  JenniferW  : welcome Vince

 21:19:23  Durff  : can i ignore guest478?

21:19:30  Diane Hammond  : The issues we discussed were not American.

21:19:38  JenniferW  : LOL -- you could but now that you have announced it -- LOL -- kinda rude  :)

 21:20:03  Durff  : exactly

21:20:06  guest478  : google search for "nicecast host echo" first response

21:20:19  Diane Hammond  : Issues such as large-scale assessment driving instruction pertain to Canada as well as the US.

 21:21:43  guest478  : it certainly is...

 21:21:43  guest478  : Montreal is a pretty good town

 21:21:55  Durff  : yes!

21:22:01  Diane Hammond  : Edubloggercon by nature I think is more international than NECC itself.

21:22:13  Diane Hammond  : Montreal is a great place for a conference!!!

21:22:53  sharonp  : good point Diane!!

 21:23:39  guest478  : is this graham wegner you're talking about/

 21:23:40  guest478  : ?

 21:23:46  vincej  : yes

 21:23:48  Durff  : me?

21:23:50  Diane Hammond  : NECC is not promoted in Canada.

 21:23:51  Durff  : yes

 21:24:02  guest478  : he's a little touchy about the US centered thing http://gwegner.edublogs.org/2006/12/29/grahams-non-authorative-2006-list...

 21:24:02  sharonp  : I agree Diane

 21:24:05  guest478  : :)

21:24:34  vincej  : NECC wa sin Philly 2 years ago

21:24:34  Colleen  : Philly gets my vote!

 21:24:41  Colleen  : Too bad.

 21:24:47  Durff  : you coming?

21:24:54  Diane Hammond  : NECC is also pretty expensive and school boards tend not to fund out of country conferences.

 21:24:58  vincej  : sure

 21:24:59  Durff  : educon20?

21:25:00  JenniferW  : Philly is again in 5 years I believe

 21:25:07  JenniferW  : 2012??

 21:25:09  guest478  : jails are bad EVERYWHERE

 21:45:06  JenniferW  : Hey Doug

 21:45:17  Durff  : ME!

21:45:18  Diane Hammond  : Great idea!

21:45:49  DS  : the other thing for conferencing of note, like NECC

21:46:08  DS  : is to make sure that media is archived for those who would like/can't make it

21:46:24  DS  : of course that's licensed by the respective assoc, but....

 21:46:29  Durff  : and don't depend on

21:46:35  JenniferW  : that is the blogger's cafe link

21:46:43  JenniferW  : it should resolve in the next 24 hours

21:46:44  Durff  : NECC to do it

 21:47:11  Durff  : JDub?

 21:47:24  Durff  : Hi Karen

 21:47:31  KarenJanowski  : Hi, all!

21:47:41  KarenJanowski  : almost forgot about WOW tonight!

 21:47:46  KarenJanowski  : what's the topic?

 21:47:49  JenniferW  : JDub -- tis ME

 21:47:53  Durff  : NECC

21:47:55  JenniferW  : Karen -- we are doing a recap

 21:48:01  KarenJanowski  : excellent!

21:48:02  JenniferW  : we are chatting about Twitter.com

 21:48:24  Durff  : Twitku

 21:48:33  Durff  : not Twitter

 21:48:41  Durff  : but Twitku

 21:49:12  Durff  : it's community

21:50:17  Diane Hammond  : So how big do you want your twitter network to be?

21:50:21  KarenJanowski  : so Twitter worked great at NECC - how about in our classrooms?

21:50:34  Diane Hammond  : do you turn down twitter requests?

 21:50:35  Durff  : it could

21:50:44  sharonp  : I think Jeff has something like 150 peeps in his twitter network

21:50:47  Durff  : but i like meebo for kids

21:51:00  sharonp  : I am careful with my twitter requests

21:51:02  KarenJanowski  : what do you see as the difference?

21:51:09  Diane Hammond  : Do "complete strangers" ask to be added to your twitter network?

21:51:20  sharonp  : haven't had too many complete strangers

21:51:25  Diane Hammond  : do you check people out first?

21:51:36  sharonp  : have had some corporate twitter users try to include me

21:51:41  Durff  : meebo widget comes to me only

21:51:54  Durff  : parents like that

21:51:58  sharonp  : can be used as a positive form of backchanneling for students

21:52:12  DS  : that Adam Frey show was great too! One of the "lost classics"

 21:52:12  Durff  : older

21:52:17  KarenJanowski  : Durff - so more control?

 21:52:25  Durff  : yes

21:52:28  sharonp  : like any tech tool - neither good nor evil, but how one uses it

 21:52:33  KarenJanowski  : that's an advantage

21:53:00  Durff  : middle school aren't mature enogh for twitter

 21:53:17  Durff  : i had that level

 21:53:28  Durff  : last year

 21:53:40  Durff  : hi tracie

21:53:58  KarenJanowski  : seems like all the "NECCites" came home changed people!!

21:54:12  Diane Hammond  : I can see the value at a big conference like NECC, but i'm not so sure on a daily basis.

21:55:04  Durff  : but diane-it keeps one in touch

21:55:21  Durff  : connects us to other people

21:55:33  KarenJanowski  : one of my concerns is that we are reducing the attention spans of our kids

21:55:35  Diane Hammond  : I think i need to try it.

21:55:48  sharonp  : good point Karen

 21:55:48  Durff  : ok - add me

21:55:55  KarenJanowski  : i see that with my own kids - if a youtube video is longer than about four minutes, they skip it

21:56:09  DS  : I had a someone send out a "social networks taking down LAN" article

 21:56:13  KarenJanowski  : too long

21:56:15  sharonp  : this is the age we live in - instant gratification

21:56:20  DS  : after a presentation re Facebook

 21:56:22  KarenJanowski  : yes!

21:56:37  DS  : tonnes o' resistance to IM and networks

 21:56:41  Durff  : i have a short span

21:56:48  Durff  : think of kids

 21:56:49  KarenJanowski  : Durff - lol

21:56:55  sharonp  : yes, there certainly is quite a lot of resistance

 21:57:14  Durff  : yea skype

21:57:17  KarenJanowski  : DS - what is LAN?

21:57:24  Diane Hammond  : That skype chat floored me!

21:57:25  DS  : Local Area Network

 21:57:27  DS  : sorry

 21:57:35  KarenJanowski  : of course!

 21:57:36  JenniferW  : http://www.flickr.com/photos/jutecht/654358254/

21:57:41  DS  : all sync stuff is "bad" in this model

21:57:43  Diane Hammond  : I don't think my brain can handle all the stimulus.

21:57:55  Durff  : sure it can

21:58:04  DS  : essentially diametrically opposed to what's being discussed

21:58:08  Diane Hammond  : with people who weren't even there

21:58:10  DS  : in terms of connections online

 21:58:20  Durff  : why?

21:58:55  DS  : threatens the existing way of "doing business" -- vested interests and all

 21:59:03  Durff  : oh

21:59:33  Durff  : "because we have always done it that way" syndrome

 21:59:39  DS  : xactly

 21:59:46  Durff  : pooh

22:00:17  DS  : sorry to hear that Sharon

22:01:18  KarenJanowski  : the men were very active blogginga bout NECC

22:01:25  KarenJanowski  : didn't see as many posts from women

 22:01:35  JenniferW  : I posted 2 times a day

22:01:37  JenniferW  : or tried to

22:01:47  KarenJanowski  : but you've been quiet lately, Jenn

 22:01:55  JenniferW  : Karen -- LOL

 22:01:57  JenniferW  : really??

22:02:01  Diane Hammond  : Thanks everybody! fun evening!
