21:28:33 alicebarr -> Thanks Durff
21:28:39 Durff -> $5
21:28:45 lee baber -> canyou have him im me?
21:28:46 SusanEttenheim -> How much can we nurture independent personal blogging and research or should we emphasize a whole group inquiry, leading to more discussion?
21:28:52 lee baber -> I have trouble too
21:28:57 alicebarr -> lol
21:28:58 derrallg -> i sent a twitter to him

21:29:09 malcorem -> cool, that helps
21:29:18 Durff -> who initiated the skype call?

21:29:27 alicebarr -> Thanks Derrallg
21:29:39 derrallg -> i'm glad when i can help
21:29:54 SusanEttenheim -> i did durff... why?

21:30:34 Durff -> or do you want him to join a backchannel
21:30:35 SusanEttenheim -> you can text me the number
21:31:33 Durff -> can utecht hear?
21:32:06 alicebarr -> Durff, not sure haven't heard back via Twitter yet
21:32:11 derrallg -> the last thing i remember reading is about cooking

21:34:49 SusanEttenheim -> welcome back malcorem
21:35:04 malcorem -> hi again
21:35:10 malcorem -> firefox quit on me...
21:35:24 SusanEttenheim -> that happens
21:36:03 Durff -> jeff says this sounds good
21:36:15 SusanEttenheim -> durff would he like to be callled in?

21:36:30 Durff -> he hears fine but i can ask
21:36:35 Durff -> if you want

21:38:42 Durff -> okay
21:41:17 mjmontagne -> does anyone have large numbers of students use blogger??
21:41:28 rickbiche -> team4kms.com/biche
21:41:29 Durff -> nope
21:41:38 mjmontagne -> we've been using blogger w/8th graders b/c it is so easy...
21:41:48 SusanEttenheim -> mjmontagne - could you remind of us where you are and what you teach?
21:42:00 mjmontagne -> but, not much control over blog tool from teacher standpoint
21:42:12 mjmontagne -> University
21:42:25 mjmontagne -> I'm the middle school technology integrator at USM
21:42:46 mjmontagne -> also teach some film/media, computer science classes
21:43:11 derrallg -> Can Lee B. talk about what her students were supposed to share today at the Unconference?
21:43:27 lee baber -> sure derrall
21:43:46 derrallg -> thanks lee :)
21:44:10 lee baber -> let me actaully speak it when we have a small opening
21:44:19 derrallg -> yes
21:45:10 derrallg -> Do others here use the Big6 model?
21:47:00 Durff -> derrall we do
21:48:13 SusanEttenheim -> hi phawkenson welcome
21:48:16 Bud -> Evenin' room.
21:48:34 SusanEttenheim -> hi bud!
21:48:35 Durff -> hi bud
21:48:44 lee baber -> so hi bud
21:49:46 Bud -> Talking blogs tonight, huh?
21:49:55 malcorem -> how often do y'all do this?
21:49:55 SusanEttenheim -> lol bud
21:50:07 SusanEttenheim -> every wed 9pm est time
21:50:08 smeech -> Derallg I focus on using #6 of Big 6 as I think it is the most important!
21:50:14 SusanEttenheim -> edtechtalk is the place to be!
21:50:23 Bud -> hey, susan - y'all've had some great shows lately
21:50:28 SusanEttenheim -> bring your questions/problems/and challenges!
21:50:35 derrallg -> @smeech I always have trouble getting there
21:50:44 SusanEttenheim -> bud we need to get your students in here talking too
21:51:11 SusanEttenheim -> we have middle school and high school places now
21:51:27 Bud -> Alas - I'm fresh out of students at the moment.
21:51:31 Bud -> Otherwise, I'd be there.
21:51:48 Bud -> But I am going to be recommending some teachers that way, soon.
21:51:49 SusanEttenheim -> lol connections in your state?
21:52:08 derrallg -> @smeech this is the first time i've met others using it
21:52:08 Bud -> oh, don't worry - I've still got access to teachers - they're not quite ready, though -
21:52:09 SusanEttenheim -> * Why not give students their own blogs--such as on blogger--which get fed into a social network vs. blogging directly in a social network?
21:52:16 Bud -> soon, so soon
21:52:42 SusanEttenheim -> our spanish community will be launching and getting active in the next few weeks too
21:52:48 smeech -> I think Ryan wrote something interesting about blogging today: http://www.bretagdesigns.com/technologist/
21:52:54 Durff -> spanish?
21:53:37 lee baber -> http://www.yugma.com/app/loading.php?user=&role=0&collsession=131941771 would you ..anyone..try this yugma to see if its working
21:53:44 mjmontagne -> student sample: http://unit8carolw.wikispaces.com
21:53:45 smeech -> Susan.. we have a Spanish teacher very interested in hooking up with a Spanish community.
21:54:08 SusanEttenheim -> great!
21:54:27 mjmontagne -> http://middleschoolblog.blogspot.com (my professional blog)
21:55:06 Durff -> what do you mean setting up in a blog susan?
21:55:41 SusanEttenheim -> durff so my students blog only in youth voices
21:55:56 SusanEttenheim -> as opposed to having an individual blogger account
21:56:11 Durff -> ah....why can't kids have more than one blog?
21:56:14 lee baber -> can anyone get in that yugma
21:56:27 SusanEttenheim -> I admire what Vicki is doing feeling that she wants her students to have "real" blogs at blogger
21:56:33 Durff -> oh i see what you mean
21:56:56 Bud -> I've done both blogger and elgg - and both make sense for different reasons/purposes.
21:57:00 SusanEttenheim -> but I think that's not right for my classes so it's an intersting question
21:57:07 Durff -> i have an 8th grader who just got a learner blog
21:57:19 Durff -> i had her last year
21:57:33 derrallg -> @lee i'm in
21:57:37 Durff -> she wanted a place to connect
21:57:39 Bud -> Is that Paul A? Is he okay?
21:57:55 SusanEttenheim -> yes bud
21:57:58 SusanEttenheim -> and yes
21:58:10 ryanbretag -> What happens if more and more teachers begin to ask students to blog? I think it is imperative that we start to look at one blog per student within schools that carry across the curriculum. This will allow for a more authentic blog. When it is isolated to a project or short time period, I'm not sure it can become a transformative piece.
21:58:19 Durff -> last i heard, she had 21 comments the first week - many from people in this chatroom (thanks)
21:58:21 Bud -> aw, man - that's too bad - just in time for the annual meeting.
21:58:28 lee baber -> oh great derrall
21:58:45 lee baber -> ryan i agree
21:58:46 Bud -> @ryan - yep. We need to build or support systems that allow for multiple options.
21:58:47 mjmontagne -> ryan-GREAT question...I have same question with ning communities
21:59:04 Durff -> which qqt?
21:59:09 SusanEttenheim -> thanks for letting us know durff!
21:59:17 lee baber -> yes durff thanks
21:59:23 Bud -> I don't think that one blog per kid always makses sense - but I do wish I could pass them out in Kindergarten and keep them going through 12th grade.
21:59:26 Durff -> thank you for commenting!
21:59:54 Durff -> mine each have their own in blogmeister
21:59:56 SusanEttenheim -> ok bud who was blogging or talking about just that this week....
22:00:04 Durff -> which needs a new server
22:00:15 derrallg -> @bud i'm having trouble teaching math and science to find the time
22:00:34 Durff -> we are required to maintain that work
22:00:43 Durff -> we have to archive it
22:01:08 Bud -> Yeah - exactly. Sustainable, and long-term.
22:01:23 SusanEttenheim -> bud do you know joyce valenza's work?
22:01:26 Durff -> laws would have to change
22:01:34 Bud -> I do - haven't read her blog this week.
22:01:38 Bud -> NeverEndingSearch?
22:01:45 Durff -> parental expectations would have to change
22:02:03 SusanEttenheim -> yes and she did a great post about blogging the research process
22:02:15 SusanEttenheim -> in what way durff?
22:02:26 derrallg -> @susan iwhere is joyce valenza posting/writing now
22:02:40 SusanEttenheim -> she has a column at the school library journal
22:02:45 SusanEttenheim -> I'll get some links
22:02:55 derrallg -> she used to have her own blog right?
22:02:58 Bud -> thanks, Susan - I'm looking now.
22:03:06 Bud -> She still does, Derrall - just moved to SLJ.
22:03:11 derrallg -> ok
22:03:44 SusanEttenheim -> http://www.schoollibraryjournal.com/blog/1340000334/post/560014056.html
22:03:54 SusanEttenheim -> she still does
22:03:58 smeech -> We still have districts looking at blogging in a negative sense: http://www.techlearning.com/blog/2007/09/dear_superintendent.php
22:04:09 SusanEttenheim -> but this article is particularly interesting I think....
22:04:18 Bud -> That's just what we did with speech class - blogged the search and research process.
22:04:21 SusanEttenheim -> why smeech?
22:04:37 lee baber -> i am on the back end tring to help jeff utecht get into our chat!
22:04:38 SusanEttenheim -> where bud- could we see it?
22:04:41 smeech -> Fear factor by schools about technology in general
22:04:47 lee baber -> working on the yugma to do this
22:04:49 smeech -> Schools fear a loss of control
22:04:55 Bud -> Some in Elgg - and some private - by the students' choice - but some public
22:04:56 ryanbretag -> It would also be nice if schools setup a page that displayed the blogs within their school -- similar to what Standford does. I'm currently building ours at GBN and it might make building the k-12 blogosphere a lot easier to navigate. Then, a nice wiki that links to the various sites would tie this together nicely.
22:04:58 Bud -> let me dig around a bit
22:05:09 derrallg -> @lee cool
22:05:20 Bud -> @ryanbretag: Bigger than one blogosphere or one wiki.
22:05:27 Durff -> wow 10:04 - gotta call it a night - work tomorrow....bye all!
22:05:28 Bud -> but I like the idea of tying communities together.
22:05:39 SusanEttenheim -> night durff - thanks for coming!
22:05:46 derrallg -> bye durff
22:06:12 lee baber -> i like tying them together too!
22:06:17 Bud -> Here's some of the conversation: http://oldeschoolspace.org/speech/weblog
22:06:19 ryanbretag -> @bud sure but there needs to be a starting point for k-12 schools looking for the connections within a familiar context before the "greater" audience
22:06:33 Bud -> I loved the levels of choice in Elgg - public, private, within a group, etc.
22:06:51 ryanbretag -> Believe me, I want our students to be writing as writers NOT students. However, I know a starting point for many will be seeing other schools
22:06:56 Bud -> Students need, too, to be able to choose what's public and what's not. And they need to know that not everything should be public.
22:07:02 lee baber -> yes.. we have the choice as teachers and they do as students
22:07:09 SusanEttenheim -> yes bud - our spanish teacher is starting a nuestras voces community
22:07:14 ryanbretag -> That is where Google Docs works so well with Blogger
22:07:20 Bud -> Students need, too, to be able to choose what's public and what's not. And they need to know that not everything should be public.
22:07:21 SusanEttenheim -> where spanish students can converse with each other
22:07:25 Bud -> oops
22:07:29 Bud -> forgive the repost
22:07:36 Bud -> Susan, that's so cool re: Spanish.
22:07:48 Bud -> @ryan - sure - there should be starting points. Plural.
22:08:00 smeech -> Night Durff!
22:08:03 ryanbretag -> right on
22:08:30 paulallison -> My students write and revise in Google Docs, publish to their own blogger accounts, then suck that into Youth Voices or Personal Learning Space.
22:08:41 Bud -> There's an awful lot of bloggers trying to wrap their heads around the entire world of blogs. Ain't gonna happen. Can't happen. Not possible.
22:08:57 SusanEttenheim -> what do you mean bud?
22:09:30 Bud -> I mean that there isn't "one blogosphere" or "edusphere" or "kidusphere." It's illusory to believe that there is.
22:09:52 SusanEttenheim -> that's what's so big for them to learn don't you think?
22:10:21 smeech -> We have layers of learning in all aspects of our student learning ... why would blogging be any different?
22:10:37 SusanEttenheim -> my students were overwhelmed when they came to class today and their little Google News search in their Google Reader had 20-40 new links!
22:10:42 derrallg -> got to go tonight, my fiancee is calling, good night everyone
22:11:12 lee baber -> susan what do they have in their readers
22:11:22 ryanbretag -> @Bud Sure... I don't see a problem with that. We do it with Web 2.o0, Classroom 2.0, etc.
22:11:37 ryanbretag -> It is how we move to a level of comfort, a level of personal understanding
22:11:44 SusanEttenheim -> they did a Google news search on the question that they are researching now
22:12:46 SusanEttenheim -> see HOw to find information for your Google Reader in the instructions section at youthwiki.wikispaces.com
22:13:01 ryanbretag -> It has been grand all -- have a great evening!
22:13:06 BUd -> I got disconnected - can someone repost the last minute or two of eloquence?
22:13:08 smeech -> later Ryan!
22:13:15 BUd -> g'night, ryan.
22:13:15 SusanEttenheim -> night ryan
22:14:22 BUd -> I missed the best part of the conversation, huh?
22:14:27 lee baber -> [smeech] Night Durff!
[ryanbretag] right on
[paulallison] My students write and revise in Google Docs, publish to their own blogger accounts, then suck that into Youth Voices or Personal Learning Space.
[Bud] There's an awful lot of bloggers trying to wrap their heads around the entire world of blogs. Ain't gonna happen. Can't happen. Not possible.
[SusanEttenheim] what do you mean bud?
[Bud] I mean that there isn't "one blogosphere" or "edusphere" or "kidusphere." It's illusory to believe that there is.
[SusanEttenheim] that's what's so big for them to learn don't you think?
[smeech] We have layers of learning in all aspects of our student learning ... why would blogging be any different?
[SusanEttenheim] my students were overwhelmed when they came to class today and their little Google News search in their Google Reader had 20-40 new links!
[derrallg] got to go tonight, my fiancee is calling, good night everyone User derrallg has logged out. [lee baber] susan what do they have in their readers [ryanbretag]
