Many of us (at least in the Northern Hemisphere), have already returned or will soon return to school. Our summer weeks of reflecting, learning, dreaming, planning, scheming are behind us. Perhaps it's useful to remember what our conversations from a few weeks back sounded like.

On this podcast, recorded a few weeks ago, Paul Allison and Susan Ettenheim are joined by three other teachers who were just trying to enjoy their summer break:

  • Allice Barr, a technology integrator at Yarmouth High School, Maine
  • George Mayo, a middle school teacher and biker from Silver Spring, Maryland
  • Margare Fiore, an English Teacher with the New School and a member with the New York City Wriitng Project

One of the projects we've been working on this summer -- and which we discuss in this podcast -- is a new Drupal site for http://youthvoices.net. We are planning to launch the new site on our webcast this week.

21:36:18 Maureen/bcdtech: How do you plan to deal with the multitude of spaces that kids are sent to work in? I remember Vicki Davis saying something about asking the kids to blog here, blog there and getting some negative feedback from the kids. The drupal will not be the only place your students go.

21:38:12 kennesab: I work with PreK-5th grade students and am interested in Youth Twitter. But am concerned with privacy as no information is to be gathered on kids under 13--and all of mine are.

21:38:34 SusanEttenheim: we'd like to see work flow into it but with the idea that those flowing work in would also participate and comment to other work.

21:42:46 kmulford: Youth Twitter is NOT the same as our twitter. All Tweets are visible to EVERYONE! I couldn't get my child's tweets to be viewed only by his "friends"...
21:43:02 Maureen/bcdtech: I teach 6-9th grade as well as gr 1-3... there are topics that just plain aren't appropriate for the different age groups etc.

21:50:14 bobcaro: They need to think about "public" writing more at home, when they think they are alone in their rooms, but they're typing something that the whole world can see.

21:52:31 bobcaro: @Bud - we should insist that they write for each other - when they write just for a grade, it's not as good writing
21:52:55 lparisi: When kids write for kids, they use texting terms, slang, etc. We allow that for their personal blog entries but not for assignments. They do need to learn that the audience counts.
21:52:56 Maureen/bcdtech: I like the channels- they are broad enough/narrow enough to pique your interest. I also liked the category stuff at the bottom- want to read a blog, get involved, etc...

21:55:28 lparisi: Oh yes, Bob. Even my 10 year olds get that they work harder when things are posted.
21:55:34 bobcaro: If it's just for a grade, a 70% is good enough for most. 70% writing quality would be pretty bad.

21:56:26 kgustin: I evaluate my kids without them knowing they are being evaluated - it is more to drive my future teaching than for grades
21:56:51 fhaas: Creating the categories from the tags is a lot like a found path, which seems pretty authentic and rooted in kids likes.

21:57:31 nhill: I am always concerned with my special ed students...writing is so hard for them sometimes and posting online draws attention to their difficulty.
