Week of January 16 - 22, 2010

Welcome to this week's EdTechTalk (ETT) newsletter! January has seen the start of two new ETT shows - 'Instructional Design Live' by Robert Squires and "K12 Online Echo" webcasts.  Instructional Design Live airs weekly on Fridays at 12:00noon EST and Susan van Gelder will host the "K12 Online Echo" webcasts twice a month on Tuesdays. The first Echo webcast will air on January 26th at 8pm EST and Jennifer Wagner, former ETT show host, will be the special guest so be sure to mark your calendars to tune in to all of the fantastic ETT offerings!

The topic on "Conversations" this past Saturday was the earthquake in Haiti. Be sure to listen to the podcast to hear the discussion and view the wiki (link below) featuring ideas, resources, connections that can be used by students to help connect with and support Haiti. Be sure to add your idea to the wiki and help kids connect and learn about the relief efforts in Haiti. The 'Hope for Haiti' telethon aired on national television stations in the United States and one star shared that students in Haiti go to school in the afternoons. At 4:53pm in Haiti last Friday when the earthquake hit, children were in school buildings and classrooms. Many of those buildings are no longer standing. The telethon was also streamed live on the Internet and Twitter feeds were abuzz with conversations about the relief efforts in Haiti. Join EdTechTalk in creating global connections and make a difference in the lives of students around the world.

The Week in Review

Instructional-Design-Live-2-2010-1-22

This week Cammy Bean interviewed Robert Squires about how he became involved in Instructional Design as well as current design projects.  Texts mentioned in the discussion:
Mark Pegrum: From Blogs to Bombs
Brinck, Gergle and Wood: Designing Websites that Work: Usability for the Web

Parents as Partner Episode # 33 January 18, 2009
Karen Bantuveris from Volunteerspot joined show hosts Matt Montagne and Lorna Costantini to discuss parent volunteerism in school. Karen is a management consultant in Austin, Texas. A little over a year ago she came up with a scheduling tool that freed up teacher and parents time organizing events. Karen provided a long list of fund raising tips, community building activities and teacher stratetgies to increase parent involvement in schools. One of the attractive features about volunteer sport software application is that it is free to the education and not for profit sector.

This week we started our conversation with a discussion about what educators can do to connect with Haitians and support efforts in Haiti. This conversation turned into a plan. We created a wiki for educators in wikispaces.  Please come see what we've created and join in with your class.  http://kids4haiti.wikispaces.com/

A fast paced round up of year end gadgets that the ETT21 team is looking forward to doing/gifting/receiving over the holidays.

SEEDLINGS 2010-01-21 Strategies for Parent Teacher Conferences
There is an elephant in the room! Teachers are all expected to participate in Parent Teacher Conferences, but are never given an opportunity to practice that or reflect on their practice. Well, SEEDLINGS took an email from an audience member, Bill Rakosnik, from Georgia, and put some questions on the NING and we had a tremendous thoughtful show for you all. Enjoy the podcast and the information.

If you would like your celebration included in the ETT newsletter please email us at [email protected].

EdTechTalk is a community of people interested in the use of technology to improve teaching and learning at all levels of education throughout the world. As a Worldbridges community, it embraces the values of collaboration and inclusiveness. The primary activity of the community is the production of a number of live, interactive webcasts. These programs cover a wide range of topics relating to educational technology. Shows are typically streamed live, and listeners can interact with one another and the show hosts through a text chat. Recordings of the shows are released as podcasts. Participation in the community is encouraged for anyone who has an interest in educational technology.
