(Another student-manager of the Ning, Jin joined us in the chat room.) Paul is also a teacher-consultant with the Indiana University Southeast Writing Project and a State Representative to ALAN from Indiana. Now hosting members from all across America! Go INcK!”

Learn about how they set up chat sessions with authors like these:

  • Ellen Hopkins, author of Crank, Burned, Impulse, Glass, and Identical.

21:18:38 Jin_Kaps 1: Mr. Hankins? Yeah, he's pretty great. I don't know what I'd do without him and RAW INcK.
21:18:58 Tyler Spencer 1: Jin and I would die without the INcK
21:19:07 Jin_Kaps 1: He speaks the truth.
21:19:14 Paul Alison 1: http://paulallison.tumblr.com/post/408225570/join-paul-hankins-and-two-s...
21:19:16 SusanEttenheim 1: Jin what was your reaction when you first heard about this project?
21:20:01 Jin_Kaps 1: I was really thrown off, actually. A teacher? Social network? huh? But I was excited. I didn't know what to make of it.  I had no idea it would be such a huge part of my life and education.
21:20:23 SusanEttenheim 1: What made you try it?
21:20:47 SusanEttenheim 1: Were you already a "good" student or were you just intrigued?
21:21:14 Jin_Kaps 1: Points. Initially, I think that was the motivation.  Yes, I was a "good" student, but I like to think I was interested in it enough anyway.
21:21:33 SusanEttenheim 1: Did you get extra points for doing it?
21:22:04 SusanEttenheim 1: welcome back dbragg
21:22:28 DBragg 1: thanks, I'm fighting with this computer...I won
21:22:34 Jin_Kaps 1: I believe so, but it was over a year ago, so I dont remember exactly. Joining was GREATLY encouraged, and I'm the type of student who wants to please the teacher.
21:23:01 SusanEttenheim 1: at what point did it start to mean something to you personally beyond the class?
21:23:02 DBragg 1: I'm a FCS teacher in Allentown, PA
21:23:19 SusanEttenheim 1: pls remind of FCS - what is it?
21:23:53 DBragg 1: Family and Consumer Science...aka Home Economics
21:24:00 SusanEttenheim 1: thanks!
21:24:10 Jin_Kaps 1: When I realized what a connection students could make to the authors Mr. Hankins was collecting.  He's talking about my best friend, Hannah, actually.  That's one of the things that really got to me.
21:24:26 SusanEttenheim 1: what got you?
21:24:52 Jin_Kaps 1: Hannah's connection with Brad Cohen.
21:25:06 Jin_Kaps 1: The magnitude of the situation amazed me.
21:25:18 Jin_Kaps 1: Author/student interaction.
21:27:21 Paul W. Hankins 1: Jin and Tyler will always be part of Room 210. They are essential to the success of RAW INcK.
21:27:33 Jin_Kaps 1: Aww thanks, Mr. Hankins.
21:27:43 Paul W. Hankins 1: We have our Super Chat next Monday with 18 YA authors.
21:27:54 Paul Alison 1: http://rawinck.ning.com/profiles/blogs/raw-inck-super-chat-march-1st
21:28:26 Paul W. Hankins 1: Unbelievable. I invited them all because I didn't want to offend anyone when we started promoting the event.
21:28:41 Paul W. Hankins 1: I didn't know that 18 would say "yes. . ."
21:29:05 Jin_Kaps 1: Absolutely.
21:29:13 Jin_Kaps 1: To what Tyler said. lol
21:29:21 Tyler Spencer 1: well.. you wrote 18...
21:29:23 Tyler Spencer 1: hehe
21:30:57 Tyler Spencer 1: I love listening to hankins talk about the inck
21:31:08 Jin_Kaps 1: Oh, me too. I could do it all day long. haha.
21:31:20 Tyler Spencer 1: Trigonometry ? or RAW INcK!
21:31:39 Jin_Kaps 1: RAW INcK!
21:32:53 Jin_Kaps 1: He makes us sound AWESOME.
21:33:42 Tyler Spencer 1: I know, right? Im developing an ego..
21:34:02 Jin_Kaps 1: I thought you already had one... haha
21:35:04 Tyler Spencer 1: FLO-CAB
21:35:43 Tyler Spencer 1: Not one
21:36:23 Jin_Kaps 1: I personally found the beat really helpful in learning the words.  I'm not even a fan of rap, but I love it.
21:37:49 Tyler Spencer 1: Shakespear is hip-hop
21:38:02 Jin_Kaps 1: Hip-hop is Shakespeare!
21:38:25 Jin_Kaps 1: Nickel on the track...
21:39:55 Tyler Spencer 1: 454
21:40:25 Tyler Spencer 1: Poets, educators authors
21:44:06 Tyler Spencer 1: Jin you still with us?
21:44:17 Jin_Kaps 1: yup, right here.
21:44:38 Tyler Spencer 1: alright, maybe we should maybe Q & A in the chat, put up some information?
21:44:48 SusanEttenheim 1: please!
21:44:59 Jin_Kaps 1: where do ya wanna start, Ty?
21:45:36 SusanEttenheim 1: what would happen if a batch of students showed up Monday? Would it get too big?
21:45:36 Tyler Spencer 1: well, I do not think that hankins has hit the student works yet. Blogs, Assignment Postings, Ect - maybe our perspective
21:45:47 SusanEttenheim 1: Would it get better or worse?
21:45:56 SusanEttenheim 1: Would it ruin your community or build it?
21:46:40 Jin_Kaps 1: For the chat? Is that what we're talking about?
21:46:47 SusanEttenheim 1: yes
21:47:06 Jin_Kaps 1: If organized properly, that would be a great experience.
21:47:17 Tyler Spencer 1: there he goes with the students
21:47:30 SusanEttenheim 1: what is the largest number of people you've had in a chat?
21:47:58 SusanEttenheim 1: I was actually my job to run online chats and we would actually close rooms at 50 and that was really too big
21:48:08 SusanEttenheim 1: It - sorry
21:48:21 Tyler Spencer 1: well, its all about student interest, our chat sessions are never what you would call underpopulated or small - I can estimate we've had 30 people
21:48:28 Jin_Kaps 1: Umm.. I think the largest one might have been with Ellen Hopkins, if I'm not mistaken, but I'm not sure how many students were there.  I wasn't able to sit in on that one that night.
21:48:35 Jin_Kaps 1: That sounds about right, Ty.
21:49:49 Paul W. Hankins 1: We would need the teacher host with that group of students, I think. They could set up a group and have the teacher as host.
21:49:58 Jin_Kaps 1: Yeah, I agree.
21:50:33 Paul W. Hankins 1: It would need to happen quickly so that we could get them organized into that group and get them settled into the Ning community.
21:50:40 Paul W. Hankins 1: 94%
21:50:43 Jin_Kaps 1: Small....
21:50:51 Tyler Spencer 1: wow

21:51:15 Jin_Kaps 1: In our class.
21:51:17 Jin_Kaps 1: I think.,
21:52:17 Paul W. Hankins 1: Some of our students graduate midterm. Early deployment to military, etc. . .
21:53:23 Jin_Kaps 1: Truth.
21:53:30 SusanEttenheim 1: uh oh
21:53:59 Jin_Kaps 1: Really?? I was never banned... hahaha
21:54:57 SusanEttenheim 1: jin what do you think makes the conversations at your site sometimes be more interesting or compelling than facebook?
21:55:34 Jin_Kaps 1: You're instantly connected with authors, educators, ect... so much to learn, to look into.
21:55:55 Tyler Spencer 1: Ill be posting the top readers in each class from now on..
21:56:22 Jin_Kaps 1: It's not meaningly chatter with friends... its real for real learning and building on yourself and who you are as a student, classmate, person.
21:56:24 SusanEttenheim 1: are you graphic novel readers too?
21:57:00 Jin_Kaps 1: Ive never read one cover to cover, but they interest me.

22:08:04 SusanEttenheim 1: similar to this
22:08:21 carolteach4 1: I am trying to join - insists I upload a photo and answer a lot of questions. I'll have to do so later as I was in school until 8pm tonight, and my brain is scrambled eggs.

22:09:33 carolteach4 1: This was a very interesting and intrieguing (can't spell tonight) conversation.
22:09:35 Jin_Kaps 1: I'd ask Mr. Hankins about additional students. I think it'd be a great idea though.
