21:15:53 andreazellner: Hooray!
21:15:55 Chris: @susan I'll check them out
21:15:56 SusanEttenheim: a sort of culmination of the year

21:16:12 cheryloakes~seedlings: I sent a message out to Doug, but he hasn't been on since Feb.
21:16:12 SusanEttenheim: what are you working on now?
21:16:35 SusanEttenheim: wow really....
21:20:17 chris sloan: We shot 'forced perspective' a couple of weeks ago, and then last week we did Mother's Day presents.  I'm up for working more with you, Susan
21:20:29 SusanEttenheim: great!
21:21:10 JL: Those long winters must make for some great lesson planning
21:21:18 SusanEttenheim: so next week, or the next weeks, I want to do 2 things
21:21:30 cheryloakes~seedlings: Yes, long winters make for great planning time.
21:22:17 SusanEttenheim: hi fred- welcome!
21:22:30 Fred Haas: Hi, Susan
21:22:38 SusanEttenheim: welcome!
21:23:40 SusanEttenheim: so chris
21:23:49 chris sloan: so Susan
21:24:02 SusanEttenheim: 1. explore free software and redo the lessons from photoshop for the free software
21:24:18 chris sloan: Oh I like that
21:24:30 chris sloan: What free software are you thinking about?
21:24:52 SusanEttenheim: online.. there's a list of 10 alternatives to photoshop - have you seen it?
21:24:56 cheryloakes~seedlings: May 27, 2010  MLTI Student Conference in University of Maine, Orono, the Ben and Ben show, will be broadcasting on ETTA from 9:15 to 10:45. They are interviewing Angus King, and an engineer from Google and others. We will tweet this out! They will be broadcasting as part of their student presentation.
21:25:15 SusanEttenheim: and second developing and sorting and looking at the navigation of their sites
21:25:20 cheryloakes~seedlings: Susan do you have a link for this free software?
21:26:02 cheryloakes~seedlings: http://www.maine.gov/mlti/index.shtml
21:27:08 SusanEttenheim: cheryl in my delicious there's a link to the free 10 alternatives to photoshop article
21:28:03 cheryloakes~seedlings: Thanks, Susan.
21:28:17 SusanEttenheim: what do you all think about free alternatives that you have to download vs web interface?
21:28:29 SusanEttenheim: I'm thinking to focus on the web based
21:28:33 SusanEttenheim: hi sara welcome!
21:28:38 Sara Beauchamp-Hicks: Hi all!
21:28:52 chris sloan: I have more experience with web based than ones I download
21:29:08 SusanEttenheim: which ones do you like?
21:29:30 Fred Haas: @Susan It depends on the purpose of the software. Some webapps are painfully slow and working from the hard drive is a lot nicer.
21:29:40 SusanEttenheim: true
21:30:07 andreazellner: I love infographics.
21:30:14 andreazellner: Especially radar graphs.
21:30:20 SusanEttenheim: chris - we started the Sites but haven't really developed them
21:30:42 SusanEttenheim: would like to revisit them and somehow get some of their best work from YV into their sites
21:30:43 JL: http://graphthe.info/
21:30:46 SusanEttenheim: did you do that?
21:31:16 SusanEttenheim: develop the Sites? chris?
21:31:53 Fred Haas: Check out http://feltron.com/ Nicholas Fletron has some pretty fascinating infographics
21:32:08 SusanEttenheim: cool thanks fred!
21:34:19 Chris: I'm curious about the effect of their teachers enthusiasm and commitment on the students' own interest in either connecting here or developing their own thing.
21:34:27 guest478: gotta fly dudes... thanks for having me in :)
21:34:36 SusanEttenheim: thanks guest!
21:34:41 andreazellner: More inforgraphics: http://thisisindexed.com/
21:34:43 cheryloakes~seedlings: bye bye guest
21:34:44 guest478: my pleasure... gotta get back to NYC
21:35:08 guest478: pleasure hearing you all as usual
21:35:48 Chris: I hear Susan talk about need too. Here own questions that she was trying to answer.
21:40:29 chris sloan: feltron and indexed ... good stuff.  Thanks Andrea and Fred
21:40:59 Fred Haas: You bet
21:41:15 andreazellner: :) NP, Chris.
21:42:33 chris sloan: @Chris.  When I'm enthused, it can rub off on the students and that's pretty cool if it does.  But sometimes, just finding that thing that I'm enthusiastic about saves me too
21:45:01 chris sloan: ... but back to the students.  When they catch fire, it's an amazing thing.  I suppose it has something to do with my enthusiasm.
21:45:08 Chris: @chris an important life skill for us all to learn from!
21:45:20 Fred Haas: It is a lot more work to make the kinds of changes in an online format, mainly because you have to do so much prior planning. The essential questions as a guide can work , particularly if they are broad enough but require enough specific hooks to offer connections.
21:45:44 cheryloakes~seedlings: Congratulations to Paul and Susan and all their listener! You have paved the way for many of us.
21:46:06 cheryloakes~seedlings: Have to cut out. See ya,
21:46:12 SusanEttenheim: ha thanks but following in cheryl and bob's footprints ;)
21:46:30 cheryloakes~seedlings: You are too kind. Night!
21:46:38 Fred Haas: If you push the students to draw meaningful connections between the work that they find interesting and investigate with the work that another student explores.
21:46:59 SusanEttenheim: fred may I skype you in?
21:47:57 SusanEttenheim: hi carol!
21:48:01 SusanEttenheim: welcome!
21:48:02 carolteach4: Hey!
21:48:25 SusanEttenheim: welcome to our party! yesterday was paul's bd and today is our 200th show
21:48:54 carolteach4: Happy Birthday to Paul and congrats on the anniversary of the show!
21:49:04 SusanEttenheim: fred is your skype on?
21:49:12 Fred Haas: Susan - sure I am logging in now
21:49:48 carolteach4: In our middle school, we still have books that classes read as a whole class, but we also have book circles that the kids really enjoy.
21:51:47 carolteach4: Our middle school kids read 1,320 books between March and April -400 kids-all of our kids carry a pleasure reading book to all classes. Lots of kids loving reading - some not- but overall, reading is valued.
21:52:13 chris sloan: I think my students need to still be careful readers of text that require longer attention spans (like books) in addition to being able to communicate effectively multimodally
21:52:24 SusanEttenheim: wow carol! yes we have required pleasure reading 3 times a week
21:55:00 carolteach4: Some of our teaching are finally "getting" the power of Google docs. As more teachers use them themselves, they'll be more apt to encourage students to use them.
21:57:34 carolteach4: I've been following some of Steve Hargadon't 21st century learning webinars - interesting speakers - lots of whom really pushing kids learning sans formal classrooms and teachers.
21:57:41 carolteach4: Hargadon's
21:58:14 chris sloan: Can you give an example of that Carol?  I haven't kept up on those webinars
22:00:10 carolteach4: He interviewed Chris Bonk last evening - more for blended schools - earlier Dr. Robert Epstein who is very anti public education with kids grouped together by age-feels we are keeping kids from taking on responsibility of adulthood by grouping them with peers.
22:00:48 carolteach4: I was really quite offended by some of Dr. Epstein's comments, but I can appreciate where he's coming from.
22:01:14 SusanEttenheim: wow carol - that's wild
22:01:34 carolteach4: All the interviews are achived on Steve's Blog site - easily downloaded as .mp3 files.
22:01:46 chris sloan: That makes sense to me.  Like I mentioned earlier in the conversation, when my students enter into dialogue with the teachers on EdTechTalk, they hold their own.  It's almost like a conversation among equals
22:02:15 carolteach4: Downloaded his interview with Sir Ken Robinson - something element - but haven't had a chance to really listen to it.'
22:04:37 carolteach4: You at TTT (along with Seedlings) have unlocked a whole new world for me. Now I am working on trying to find opportunities for my students to have a similar participatory experience. NASA offeres some during the school day.
22:06:30 SusanEttenheim: wonderful carol!
22:06:31 carolteach4: I got a few kids in for the Scholastic webinar with authors (R.L.Stein was one of the 4) playing a game like "So you want to be a millionair" with trivial from adolescent and kids books. They had access to the questions prior to the show and played along with the authors and LOVED it.
22:08:17 carolteach4: I just met a teacher from a neighboring town who does lunch interviews with his students and "experts" and then podcasts the interviews. It's wild. His daughter is coming to my school next year, and he's going to help me institute something like that.
22:08:41 chris sloan: Where do you teach Carol?
22:08:47 carolteach4: Bethany, CT
22:08:55 carolteach4: 7 and 8th grade
22:09:32 chris sloan: Do you have a link to some of those lunch interviews?
22:09:50 hickstro: Thank you all -- congrats again on #200 and continuing the conversations!
22:09:56 carolteach4: I listened to the TTT with Susan, Sara Sutter, and the lawyer -Jaczi? - I listened to it about 5 times.
22:10:10 chris sloan: Yes, thanks Dave, Jeff, Paul, Susan...
22:10:19 SusanEttenheim: wow carol that was a while ago!
22:10:23 andreazellner: Yay on #200!  Great work!
22:10:27 carolteach4: @Chris - I will get it for you -next week -
22:10:32 Chris: Thank you World Bridges and the TTT team!
22:10:53 carolteach4: It's lunchsomething buddies, I think
22:10:58 Fred Haas: Thanks again for everything. Many congrats to all!
22:11:28 Chris: great!
22:11:35 SusanEttenheim: night all thanks!
22:11:37 carolteach4: night
22:11:38 Chris: night all
