2009-01-08 13:17:33 alex.ragone -> As we go -- Feel free to put your questions in.
2009-01-08 13:20:24 sarah h -> I wonder how often the "other" programs end up being the places that many students really value and connect with, more so than courses?
2009-01-08 13:23:00 demetri -> gotta run to lunch. see ya later. I'll have to catch the recording L8r. thx

2009-01-08 13:23:42 alex.ragone -> Like I did.
2009-01-08 13:24:23 alex.ragone -> Online Learning 2.0
2009-01-08 13:24:40 alex.ragone -> It's going to be social. Could be in a game.
2009-01-08 13:24:46 alex.ragone -> Could be community based.
2009-01-08 13:24:50 alex.ragone -> Where do you see this/
2009-01-08 13:24:51 alex.ragone -> ?
2009-01-08 13:25:25 alex.ragone -> http://youthvoices.net [14]
2009-01-08 13:28:21 David Withrow -> Isn't what Christensen suggesting that schools as an institution "cram" technology into the traditional instruction? Technology provides a shift away from that kind of instruction towards a more collaboration hands on approach in location and distant learning.
2009-01-08 13:28:59 alex.ragone -> David -- I think there are two perspectives -- 1. Drill and Kill and 2. Open Social.
2009-01-08 13:29:03 PeggyG -> that homework model using podcasts for lectures sounds like it has great potential--makes a lot of sense
2009-01-08 13:29:09 alex.ragone -> You can do both with technology.
2009-01-08 13:31:15 alex.ragone -> Right?
2009-01-08 13:31:23 David Withrow -> Sure drill and kill is using technology to "cram" a style into a technology that is far more adaptive.
2009-01-08 13:32:04 PeggyG -> I thought the conversation with George Siemens on WOW2 this week was fascinating when he talked about how "connectivism" is understood in so many different countries/cultures around the world.
2009-01-08 13:33:43 PeggyG -> so many different views of education around the world
2009-01-08 13:33:50 David Withrow -> Peggy - I agree podcasts or reading homework is far more useful than the send them home to do practice "too often badly" an idea or ineffectively attempting to regurgitate answers.
2009-01-08 13:33:54 alex.ragone -> And in some ways, you have the ability to innovate above that to have basic skills practiced with tech helping it along.
2009-01-08 13:34:32 PeggyG -> technology really supports individualized learning based on learning styles/multiple intelligences
2009-01-08 13:34:39 David Withrow -> Yes
2009-01-08 13:37:55 PeggyG -> I agree--blended learning models are very important for both independent schools and public schools!
2009-01-08 13:40:19 alex.ragone -> http://schoolcomputing.wikia.com/wiki/Designing_the_21st_Century_School [12]
2009-01-08 13:40:22 PeggyG -> the resources are very important but often people use it as an excuse for not moving forward--saying they don't have the resources
2009-01-08 13:40:28 alex.ragone -> http://disruptedacademy.wikispaces.com/ [8]
2009-01-08 13:40:50 alex.ragone -> Any foundation head's out there willing to support this?
2009-01-08 13:41:06 sarah h -> What about a "school within a school" model?
2009-01-08 13:41:19 alex.ragone -> Any suggestions on foundations that would support this?
2009-01-08 13:41:32 alex.ragone -> Sarah -- I definitely think this works.
2009-01-08 13:41:49 PeggyG -> looking for foundations to provide financial support? what would they be funding?
2009-01-08 13:42:05 alex.ragone -> COuld be Fred's idea of the virtual academy.
2009-01-08 13:42:13 sarah h -> I'm trying to get some traction for the idea of setting something up within our middle school now for students who are having trouble, but are capable.
2009-01-08 13:42:37 PeggyG -> that sounds great Sarah!
2009-01-08 13:43:03 DeeBeaChi -> MacArthur-but they are fixated on gaming as the only model- and that is limited (especially for girls) http://www.macfound.org/site/c.lkLXJ8MQKrH/b.946881/k.380D/Domestic_Gran... [15]
2009-01-08 13:43:41 sarah h -> thanks guys
2009-01-08 13:43:57 DeeBeaChi -> Can anyone meet in CHicago at the NAIS to chat about this?
2009-01-08 13:44:23 sarah h -> @DeeBeaChi http://isenet.ning.com/events/event/show?id=1194706%3AEvent%3A39631 [16]
2009-01-08 13:44:31 PeggyG -> very interesting conversation--can't wait to explore the wiki and google site
2009-01-08 13:44:38 DeeBeaChi -> Thank oyu-figured there must be somethign!
2009-01-08 13:44:50 PeggyG -> thanks everyone! lots of things to think about
