Teachers Teaching Teachers #117 - Thinking about Classroom Blogging with Sarah Hurlburt - 08.13.08

In the midst of planning a re-launch of a school-based social network, Youth Voices, we happened upon a paper that clearly and fairly described the problems many of us face when we blog with students in our classrooms. In her paper in the June 2008 Journal of Online Learning and Teaching (JOLT Vol. 4, No. 2), Sarah Hurlburt discusses some of "frustrations and puzzlements" that many of us have had in using classroom blogs over the past several years.

Sarah articulates our reasons for wanting to set up a site like Youth Voices. Many of us have felt the gap between the promise of blogging and the results in our classrooms.

The point at which the instructor feels [classroom blogging] to have failed in some way, is when these individual written elements fail to interconnect – when the social element, upon which instructors place high hopes for a subsequent critical element – fails to materialize.

Defining Tools for a New Learning Space: Writing and Reading Class Blogs

Paul Allison and Susan Ettenheim invited Sarah Hurlburt on to our webcast to continue the dialogue about blogging, and we were joined by elementary school teachers, Lisa Parisi and Linda Nitsche.

Enjoy the podcast, and read Sarah Hurlburt's paper.

Teachers Teaching Teachers #115 - Imagining a New Chapter- 07.30.08

Many of us (at least in the Northern Hemisphere), have already returned or will soon return to school. Our summer weeks of reflecting, learning, dreaming, planning, scheming are behind us. Perhaps it's useful to remember what our conversations from a few weeks back sounded like.

On this podcast, recorded a few weeks ago, Paul Allison and Susan Ettenheim are joined by three other teachers who were just trying to enjoy their summer break:

Allice Barr, a technology integrator at Yarmouth High School, Maine

George Mayo, a middle school teacher and biker from Silver Spring, Maryland

Margare Fiore, an English Teacher with the New School and a member with the New York City Wriitng Project

One of the projects we've been working on this summer -- and which we discuss in this podcast -- is a new Drupal site for http://youthvoices.net. We are planning to launch the new site on our webcast this week.

We invite you to help us re-launch http://youthvoices.net on Wednesday, August 27, 2008. Join us, right here at EdTechTalk at 9:00pm Eastern / 6:00pm Pacific USA Wednesdays / 01:00 UTC Thursdays World Times.

Teachers Teaching Teachers #114 - Re-thinking Youth Voices - 07.23.08

Over the past several weeks, Paul Allison, Alice Barr, Susan Ettenheim, George Mayo, and Chris Sloan have been working with Bill Fitzgerald and other primates at Funny Monkey to move two school-based social networks, The Personal Learning Space and Youth Voices to a new Drupal site. Several teachers have been working together on these projects, and some of the curriculum that we have developed together is available here, at http://youthplans.wikispaces.com/curriculum.

On this podcast, recorded a month ago, Paul Allison and Susan Ettenheim welcome a student, a teacher, and our lead reaseacher and advisor for these projects:

Hannah Feldman, a junior at Science Leadership Academy in Philadelphia, PA, USA

Lynn Culp, Northridge Academy, north of Los Angels, CA, USA

Dave Cormier, University of Prince Edward Island, Charlottetown, PE, Canada

We talk about what Youth Voices might become this coming school year.

Much work has been done on this project, and we invite you to join us as we re-launch http://youthvoices.net on Wednesday, August 27, 2008. Join us, right here at EdTechTalk at 9:00pm Eastern / 6:00pm Pacific USA Wednesdays / 01:00 UTC Thursdays World Times

Teachers Teaching Teachers #112 - Revisiting VoiceThread - 07.09.08

This July, Paul Allison and Julie Conason fascilated a 3-week Writing Project Institute for teachers where we used VoiceThread as the focus of one of our weeks together. In the middle of our work with teachers, we invited Steve Muth, co-founder of VoiceThread, and Colette Cassinelli, a technology teacher near Portland, Oregon who started a wiki that collects examples of VoiceThreads.

What will you find on Collette's VoiceThread4Education?

Samples submitted by teachers of VoiceThread projects made by their students

VoiceThreads used in professional development

Resources, including other websites that contain VoiceThread examples

Best Practices - tips and ideas of how to best implement VoiceThread in your curriculum

Subject area ideas

"This is your wiki," Colette writes: "Please feel free to add any ideas,
examples or resources to the site and provide appropriate link
attribution. If you are not sure how to embed your VoiceThread projects
in wikispaces - follow the directions below."

In addition: Paul and Julie invite you to take a look at the "Narrative Discussions" from our Institute, linked below. We would love your comments on these.

Teachers Teaching Teachers #107 - What have we learned this year with VoiceThread? 06.04.08

Join Matt Montagne, Ben Papelle, Susan Ettenheim, Paul Allison, Chris Sloan, Bill O'Neal, and Hannah Feldman in a reflective conversation about where we have come this year, and where we want to go next year.

We especially look at how to move beyond our initial infatuation with VoiceThread to a more long-lasting relationship that emphasises what VoiceThread probably does best: inspire, generate, and build online conversatons.

Here are a couple of VoiceThreads that were made back in February 2008. Many of us used these to prepare our students for the Many Voices for Darfur project that George Mayo and Wendy Dexler organized in the first week of March 2008.

I present this pair of VoiceThreads as an example. By comparing the presentation that I, Paul Allison, made (top) with the of the kind of collaborative space created by Bill Ferriter (Darth Tater) and his 6th Graders in North Carolina (bottom), we can begin to understand the constructive critique that we build up to on this podcast.

Teachers Teaching Teachers #106 - What's new about creating projects in the digital age? 05.28.08

Except for our colleagues in the the Southern Hemisphere,
many of us are either already enjoying the summer holidays or we are
looking forward to them coming soon. Teachers often use this time to
relax and reflect on their work. We collaborate with other teachers in
summer workshops and catch up on professional reading. Summer
Invitational Institutes are the heart of the work for National Writing
Projects across the country. What a better time to stop and take a look
at a new book by Suzie Boss and Jane Krauss? Their book, Reinventing
Project Based Learning was published earlier this year, and many of us
will be using this book to guide our project planning processes.

To learn more about this "Field Guide to Real-World
Projects in the Digital Age," we asked Suzie Boss and Jane Krauss to
join us on this podcast. The magic of doing this live allowed us to
also include Chris Lehman, Principal of the Science Leadership Academy in
Philadelphia, PA and Gail Desler, Technology Integration Specialist for
Elk Grove Unified School District in Sacramento, CA. and Tech Liaison for the Area 3 Writing Project.

Enjoy the conversation! And
don't forget to check out the chat and our FriendFeed room that has

Teachers Teaching Teachers #102 - Connecting to Place-based Education in Alaska - 4.30.08
The ice has melted, many are off fishing, and schools have graduated their seniors in the rural areas of Alaska where our guests for this podcast are from. But our colleagues in Alaska have already begun planning for the next academic year, and on this podcast, you can find way to connect with them. In this podcast, we focused on the "Digital Foxfire approach to Placed-based Education" that seems to describe some of the work in the schools in Marshall, Alaska and in the Bering Strait School District (BSSD). Our guides for this conversation were:

John Concilus, Director of Technology, BSSD

Ginger Crockett, teacher Brevig Mission, Alaska

Woody Woodgate, who will soon be working for the State of Alaska's Education and Early Development Department

Flora Evan, Language Arts teacher, Marshall, Alaska

Listen to the podcast, then connect! Click Read more (below), and see what they are cooking up in the Bering Strait School District. Add your thoughts to their survey, and click Contact. We'll see you there.

Teachers Teaching Teachers #101 - Collaborating in the Bering Sea - 04.23.08

On this podcast Susan Ettenheim and Paul Allison are joined by John Concilus, Director of Educational Technology, and a student from one of the schools in the Bering Strait School District. John introduced himself a few weeks ago by responding to an earlier podcast with a "Comment and Invitation for Collaboration."

Learn more about the Bering Strait School District and their work with technology. Then this Wednesday, April 30, join John Concilus again, plus a teacher from Brevig Mission, AK, Ginger Crockett, and others. Woody Woodgate and a colleague may be joining us as well. (Maybe we'll finally find out more about that seal hunt.)

We are excited to continue our connections with teachers in Alaska, and in particular we want to learn more about "place-based education." Here's what John said in a recent email:

We've already decided at the budget meeting to move forward with
our Digital Foxfire program next school year. I'll have more information about this
by Wednesday, but will have a form set up by then for having potentially intersted
	partner schools sign up.

Where's Brevig Mission? Check out this map, and use the zoom to find where you are in relation to Ginger's school.
