2008-03-04 21:17:11 KarenJan @virtualteacher - there's a great resource online to make talking books out of ppt - google it
2008-03-04 21:17:11 cheryloakes wow2 bye steve
2008-03-04 21:17:25 sylvia k.norton joyce's outfit is always cute
2008-03-04 21:17:38 CathyNelson Hi Kitty--taking time off from NB portfolio?
2008-03-04 21:17:41 KarenJan @virtualteacher - i've adapted it and can do it pretty quickly - instead of scanning the books, I take pictures of each page - it's much easier
2008-03-04 21:17:51 colettec you can use forms in google spreadsheets to make instant polls now
2008-03-04 21:18:00 mkforbus Hey Cathy! You know it!
2008-03-04 21:18:02 CathyNelson @LarenJan legally?
2008-03-04 21:18:09 Vicki Davis What an amazingly cool idea!
2008-03-04 21:18:11 Vicki Davis Wow!
2008-03-04 21:18:11 sylvia k.norton I also use polls like that in staff development sessions. Get's them into being there and participating
2008-03-04 21:18:18 cheryloakes wow2 thanks for the tip on google spreadsheets, colettec
2008-03-04 21:18:23 Vicki Davis I like surveyshare.com -- for powerful research.
2008-03-04 21:18:49 CathyNelson @joyce we will have to work that in at the panel at necc
2008-03-04 21:18:54 loonyhiker i've used survey monkey
2008-03-04 21:19:08 Virtual Teacher @KarenJan Digital Photos is a great idea. I have been maikng digital books using iMovie, but it's the scanning that kills me.
2008-03-04 21:19:10 colettec survey monkey is super easy too
2008-03-04 21:19:16 sharonp Am really hoooked on surveymonkey - will be analysing data from it about PD for our province in the next few weeks
2008-03-04 21:19:24 KarenJan @cathynelson - yes since the class has the book and these are for students with significant special needs - can't share with others
2008-03-04 21:19:37 PeggyG I love surveymonkey but it costs money
2008-03-04 21:19:38 CathyNelson new names?? information station
2008-03-04 21:19:40 mmiller I have used zoho polls but can't make it work now
2008-03-04 21:20:07 joycevalenza try polldaddy instead
2008-03-04 21:20:09 Vicki Davis surveyshare gives free pro accounts to educators -- curtis bonk controls it.
2008-03-04 21:20:09 CathyNelson MUST change
2008-03-04 21:20:14 bookminder I used a Google Docs survey this week and it was good
2008-03-04 21:20:20 mmiller I didn't think survey monkey cost anything
2008-03-04 21:20:24 Ann-NJTechTeacher @PeggyG It's free as long as you can stick to 10 questions and less than 100 surveys
2008-03-04 21:20:27 CathyNelson yes
2008-03-04 21:20:29 CathyNelson ys
2008-03-04 21:20:32 mmiller Oh
2008-03-04 21:20:34 CathyNelson yes
2008-03-04 21:20:39 colettec survey monkey will give you some access for free
2008-03-04 21:20:40 sharonp I thought that UK study - Google Generation - really raised sme interesting points
2008-03-04 21:20:41 donnadesroches yes
2008-03-04 21:20:52 CathyNelson GREETINGS @SC TEacher
2008-03-04 21:21:13 James.Sigler Let's not throw the library out with the bathwater
2008-03-04 21:21:14 CathyNelson no one catalogs anymore Vicki!! we buy the records
2008-03-04 21:21:18 colettec i <heart> libraries
2008-03-04 21:21:22 loonyhiker @sc teacher where r u in sc? i'm in greenville :)
2008-03-04 21:21:31 Michael.Dodes Library refers technically to just books...and carries a LOT of connotations with it, maybe we should re-evaluate that
2008-03-04 21:21:32 sroseman http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/2859845.stm
2008-03-04 21:21:37 cheryloakes wow2 good point, Joyce, serving learners.
2008-03-04 21:21:48 sharonp unfortunately none of our public schools have librarians anymore - tehy have technicians... no real interface with the students
2008-03-04 21:21:49 loonyhiker i was always scolded and told to say media center
2008-03-04 21:21:51 CathyNelson amen !joyce
2008-03-04 21:22:05 loonyhiker our librarians are called media specialists
2008-03-04 21:22:05 Vicki Davis libratory!!! WOW!
2008-03-04 21:22:08 sylvia k.norton Media carries a lot of connotations too - like the news media
2008-03-04 21:22:12 CathyNelson @looneyhiker I say call it whatever u want
2008-03-04 21:22:13 cheryloakes wow2 Libratory, serving learning and learners!
2008-03-04 21:22:14 Vicki Davis I love that term -- LIBRATORY LIBRATORY --
2008-03-04 21:22:16 Michael.Dodes If we're going to re-invent ourself, we need to let go of the labels
2008-03-04 21:22:19 dellacurtis All 175 library media specialists in my county do NOT catalog books, they teach!
2008-03-04 21:22:21 CathyNelson its YOUR space too
2008-03-04 21:22:29 donnadesroches libraries = information, knowledge, wisdom not books
2008-03-04 21:22:30 PeggyG Yes for very short polls it would work fine--if you want to compile and analyze results and do other more extensive work with them you need to pay--I've use the pro account for years primarily because of action research projects
2008-03-04 21:22:32 VinnieVrotny in past, they used to chain books into the space. now, since people to guide are the important aspect of the library, should we chain them to the libraries?
2008-03-04 21:22:38 CathyNelson Hey Diane Chen!!
2008-03-04 21:22:51 srenatee amen! we just want to make the info accessible
2008-03-04 21:23:06 colettec why do it yourself when the purchased records are so good
2008-03-04 21:23:13 Michael.Dodes info-brary?
2008-03-04 21:23:16 CathyNelson its a place for multitasking for all school community
2008-03-04 21:23:34 csitterley Have a full day meeting with k-12 librarians on Friday and looking forward to sharing from this event with them
2008-03-04 21:23:40 CathyNelson and learners get ideas form other learners in the library
2008-03-04 21:23:40 sylvia k.norton Even in the dark ages, my library was never about cataloging. It was about getting students able to find and use information as well as the love of reading etc. This was true when the only technology in my library was a typewriter!
2008-03-04 21:23:43 loonyhiker had one librarian years ago who allowed no talking in library and growled if you touched a book
2008-03-04 21:23:51 colettec the library should be the hub of the whole school
2008-03-04 21:23:56 heatherloy the library is an extension of the classroom
2008-03-04 21:24:07 matt montagne2 k on the eeePC now...
2008-03-04 21:24:15 CathyNelson dewy what?
2008-03-04 21:24:20 donnadesroches the creating and publishing center of the school - to quote Alan November
2008-03-04 21:24:22 CathyNelson Dewey who?
2008-03-04 21:24:22 Virtual Teacher I wish that we still had people in our libraries to interact with the students. We have parent volunteers who sign books out and re-shelve them. They take care of the library for us, but we need trained specialists who can help teach the kids.
2008-03-04 21:24:24 sylvia k.norton the library is a very dynamic classroom itself
2008-03-04 21:24:35 lindarogde Cataloguing is only a means to an end--- being able to find something
2008-03-04 21:24:37 joycevalenza yes, the largest classroom in the school
2008-03-04 21:24:40 srenatee i had great aides who could interact
2008-03-04 21:24:46 loonyhiker when we got a 2nd librarian who encourage ppl in there, we went from 1% usage to about 90% usage by students
2008-03-04 21:24:49 bookminder In my district we are teacher-librarians. I tell the kids that I am there to make them look good, by giving them the skills in info lit they need to be successful
2008-03-04 21:24:52 sendkathy @CathyNelson, how does a school library plan to become that ideal? Is it about layout, equipment, resources? Do you know of any great elementary school models?
2008-03-04 21:24:56 Vicki Davis I think that many libraries are considered "sanitary" while my classroom is "messy" -- very few librarians I think like the idea of having "argument" or snuggling up w/ a laptop.
2008-03-04 21:24:58 Vicki Davis Or do they?
2008-03-04 21:25:08 sharonp we are at the point whre we desperately need info specialists and instead we are seeing awful cutbacks
2008-03-04 21:25:13 Michael.Dodes I tried to tell a teacher I was a teacher...they kept trying to change it around so I would admit I didn't teach...I wouldn't budge
2008-03-04 21:25:30 loonyhiker our media specialist was also the IT person
2008-03-04 21:25:32 CathyNelson @sendkathy elementaris r the hardest cuz they become the planning period, but yes, they r out there
2008-03-04 21:25:40 Vicki Davis Do you all see librarians like this? I'm a bit envious.
2008-03-04 21:25:45 cheryloakes wow2 good for you Michael, I am glad you are a teacher!
2008-03-04 21:26:12 colettec libraries = ACCESS
2008-03-04 21:26:14 CathyNelson wikis
2008-03-04 21:26:16 dianerchen Had a parent volunteer in today for the second time who wondered at all we do in a short amount of time to support everyone in school. She stated it best, "What would the school do without you?"
2008-03-04 21:26:24 srenatee @vickiedavis. many librarians are great...still a few old stereotypes out there.
2008-03-04 21:26:29 cheryloakes wow2 yes cathynelson, libraries get a bad rap , like the lab, as a planning time for teachers
2008-03-04 21:26:38 CathyNelson daj define 3.0
2008-03-04 21:26:44 srenatee my library is a happening, noisy place
2008-03-04 21:26:49 sendkathy @CathyNelson, if you have a link to a really good elementary media center site I would love to check it out.
2008-03-04 21:26:49 Vicki Davis I think great libraries are amazing -- but I guess I know a few who like to hoard things.
2008-03-04 21:26:52 CathyNelson doug u r form a non filtering worlld
2008-03-04 21:26:56 loonyhiker i know some tchrs who send the bad kids to the library to get them out of their class
2008-03-04 21:27:01 colettec i would love to have my student work cataloged in the libary
2008-03-04 21:27:01 dellacurtis There is no digital divide for students in the library media center - it levels out the playing field for all knowledge workers.
2008-03-04 21:27:03 Vicki Davis @cathy -- they packet shape
2008-03-04 21:27:05 CathyNelson @sendkathy will work on it now
2008-03-04 21:27:06 daj Web 3D
2008-03-04 21:27:10 Vicki Davis @loonyhiker
2008-03-04 21:27:17 carlenewalter Can you comment on some school division's choice to replace teacher-librarians with educational assistants? The library is becoming, in many places, a shelving only place rather than a hub of collaboration.
2008-03-04 21:27:32 dianerchen I love the bad kids. We join together to show the teachers that they learn BETTER in the library with free choice and excitement.
2008-03-04 21:27:35 Michael.Dodes If a teacher is going to send a student to the library, I demand that they come with work to do at the least so I can help them learn
2008-03-04 21:27:42 csitterley Our librarians sometimes seem to see themselves as second class citizens in the learning community -want to help them see the importance of their roles
2008-03-04 21:27:46 James.Sigler Web 3.0=Web 3D?
2008-03-04 21:27:49 KarenJan "No such thing as a bad kid" read the book!!!
2008-03-04 21:27:54 srenatee schools who don't understand the power of the lms will cut the position
2008-03-04 21:27:55 colettec SL no access for kids
2008-03-04 21:27:57 sharonp I have only met a handful of local librarians in my context who have thought about web 2.0
2008-03-04 21:28:22 Vicki Davis Yes, it makes so much more sense!
2008-03-04 21:28:27 dianerchen Hey Tisch
2008-03-04 21:28:27 Vicki Davis Absolutely!
2008-03-04 21:28:34 carlenewalter Hello Violet!
2008-03-04 21:28:37 CathyNelson http://www.readingwithmsbyrd.com/ @sendkathy
2008-03-04 21:28:46 sharonp but ironically, the web 2.0 librarian scene i s lively and dynamic -
2008-03-04 21:28:48 dianerchen Tisch is a technology coach who works with school librarians in a big district
2008-03-04 21:28:54 daj Hi David!
2008-03-04 21:28:55 CathyNelson OMG hello David Loertscher
2008-03-04 21:28:59 srenatee absolutely....use everything!!!
2008-03-04 21:29:01 carlenewalter Hello Violet!
2008-03-04 21:29:02 cheryloakes wow2 welcome tisch!
2008-03-04 21:29:02 ehelfant the library should be the most creative, dynamic center of learning on campus..place to get help with everything.. Our libarains and I help plan curriculum.. they are a center for tech support
2008-03-04 21:29:02 dellacurtis Production equipment has a long history in library media centers - early 1970's
2008-03-04 21:29:03 PeggyG It's been so sad to see the elimination of librarians in schools due to dwindling public funding--especially in our state (near the bottom in funding)
2008-03-04 21:29:03 vtkari who was lookikng for elem sites? we have 4th graders blogging, 6th graders making wikis and k's doing virtual manipulatives..all in thelibrary
2008-03-04 21:29:09 CathyNelson we have the true library heros here tonight!
2008-03-04 21:29:13 colettec production equipment must be included in library b/c they can't finish it all in class
2008-03-04 21:29:18 sharonp I agree @Peggy
2008-03-04 21:29:19 sylvia k.norton Those are 'traditional' librarians. Those are librarians who never understood an effective program in the first place. We 'produced' back when it was an overhead projector!
2008-03-04 21:29:28 CathyNelson @joyce and heroines
2008-03-04 21:29:39 srenatee lol, doug. yes....
2008-03-04 21:29:40 dellacurtis Agree, Doug!
2008-03-04 21:29:51 Vicki Davis Yes generalizations can apply to all of us!!!
2008-03-04 21:29:56 sendkathy Do any librarians out there have a philosohphy on scheduling time in the library? We have a flexible scheduling system and it causes me to miss my day because it is never at the same time or same day.
2008-03-04 21:29:56 srenatee but in all professions. sometimes we can't 'hide' like teachers.
2008-03-04 21:29:59 colettec we need to encourage production outside of class too
2008-03-04 21:30:03 CathyNelson keep thinking my skype chat is going cuz I hear someone else's
2008-03-04 21:30:06 cheryloakes wow2 Yes Sylvia, and the are some who will make some great changes with support.
2008-03-04 21:30:20 dianerchen sendkathy - what do you mean by "your day"
2008-03-04 21:30:28 ehelfant Our library checks out headsets, video camera, ipods..
2008-03-04 21:30:28 sharonp I agree Joyce - huge shift
2008-03-04 21:30:30 cheryloakes wow2 I know Cathy,I keep looking too.
2008-03-04 21:30:32 loonyhiker our library had a master calendar with the resources listed. we could sign up for any if not already taken
2008-03-04 21:30:41 srenatee i agree. it's alll in the environment we create for our kids.
2008-03-04 21:30:45 sharonp and yet, there are those who are soooo reluctant to do so
2008-03-04 21:30:48 dellacurtis Absolutely, Joyce! Trust goes a long way - it is their library.
2008-03-04 21:30:50 donnadesroches I have found that students are very respectful with equipment, etc
2008-03-04 21:31:04 dianerchen Do your teachers still view the library as only the room in the building or as a resource that extends in the community and homes?
2008-03-04 21:31:06 sharonp It is unfortunate that teachers have not HAD to make that shift
2008-03-04 21:31:13 ehelfant i struggle with the older teachers wanting the library to be a quiet place of study
2008-03-04 21:31:15 CathyNelson those non changing admin are some of the problemo daj
2008-03-04 21:31:20 srenatee amen sista
2008-03-04 21:31:34 colettec we are all retooling our education - we must!
2008-03-04 21:31:39 malewine in our state (SC) recommendations for building new libraries, we have the space recommendation for a production studio. The idea is to encourage, foster, and facilitate collaboration between teachers, media specialists (information specialists), and students. Had a meeting recently with a local architect who's working on a new library design and he admitted that a production studio in the library was a new concept to him.
2008-03-04 21:31:46 sendkathy Well, by my day I mean that I can sign up for two times a month for a story time for my class and then I can send a couple kids at a time any day to check out books. The scheduled time is essentially a lesson but I must attend so it isn't a 'planning' period!
2008-03-04 21:31:51 CathyNelson we should take the non changing ppl as a challenge!! MODEL MODEL MODEL
2008-03-04 21:32:05 dellacurtis I can't think of a day that goes by where I don't rethink, embrace new technololgies, etc.
2008-03-04 21:32:08 loonyhiker glad to see SC so well represented tonite :)
2008-03-04 21:32:11 bookminder when the kids know you are working for them the whole atmosphere changes. This year I brough it couches and bean bag chairs and the kids whole attitude has changed.
2008-03-04 21:32:13 Michael.Dodes @dellacurtis me too
2008-03-04 21:32:25 CathyNelson your welcome--i advertised unmuercifully
2008-03-04 21:32:28 James.Sigler What will cause teachers to change?
2008-03-04 21:32:32 CathyNelson unmercifully
2008-03-04 21:32:38 Michael.Dodes High stakes testing of course
2008-03-04 21:32:39 cheryloakes wow2 good thing to do bookminder!
2008-03-04 21:32:41 colettec information/production/remashing 24/7 service!
2008-03-04 21:32:44 Michael.Dodes haven't you read the news?
2008-03-04 21:32:46 srenatee more than teachers, librarians must be their own advocates...prove their worth
2008-03-04 21:33:04 CathyNelson but we r not tested, so some treat us as unimportant
2008-03-04 21:33:07 Vicki Davis We all must prove our worth.
2008-03-04 21:33:17 srenatee we must stay ABOVE the radar....teachers can fly low sometimes.
2008-03-04 21:33:18 Vicki Davis If we are doing rote routine tasks and that is it, we can be replaced.
2008-03-04 21:33:29 Vicki Davis Teachers who just do handouts and lectures... can be easily replaced.
2008-03-04 21:33:33 CathyNelson i love to see teachers who breeze thru the lib when I am teaching--they get sucked in
2008-03-04 21:33:36 Vicki Davis Librarians who only catalog can be replaced.
2008-03-04 21:33:41 malewine Besides being our own advocates, it is important to teach in front of teachers
2008-03-04 21:33:49 colettec only one kid needs access to the pathfinder - the others will find them on MySpace, IM
2008-03-04 21:33:50 dianerchen In order to prove our worth, we must have others who advocate for us. How many are creating parent advocacy groups like the Washington moms?
2008-03-04 21:34:03 cheryloakes wow2 good point Vicki, we don't want to be rote, however we do need to be transparent and share so all people learn about new libraries.
2008-03-04 21:34:05 Michael.Dodes We need to be more than the direct sources of information, we need to provide the tools to let people do the work themselves.
2008-03-04 21:34:27 CathyNelson igoogle is what the kids KNOW
2008-03-04 21:34:28 cheryloakes wow2 dianerchen, good point, yes, we need a cheerleading squad
2008-03-04 21:34:31 Vicki Davis Yes -- my students create RSS readers in netvibes.
2008-03-04 21:34:38 Vicki Davis Great thing to do!
2008-03-04 21:34:44 sharonp What acool approach!
2008-03-04 21:34:52 Vicki Davis I think every student should have a "launching pad" -- every student.
2008-03-04 21:34:55 csitterley Our district cut the library aides-libraries have 20 computers, 25 laptops and one librarian- have to do clerical-want to work with kids
2008-03-04 21:34:59 dianerchen As a former cheerleader, I know that I had to learn about the game to say the appropriate cheer.
2008-03-04 21:35:07 bookminder @Cathy Nelson. You're right about teachers getting sucked in. They often learn as much as the kids when I'm teaching and I see the teachers taking notes.
2008-03-04 21:35:10 daj Info pimping of personal sites!
2008-03-04 21:35:16 Virtual Teacher @malewine I think that you are right - there would be more valueing of what librarians do (and fewer funding cuts) if more teachers (and higher ups) could see the teaching that can come from a skilled and involved teaching librarian.
2008-03-04 21:35:18 cheryloakes wow2 Joyce, good idea and strategy! individualized web portal
2008-03-04 21:35:19 ehelfant @vicki what would you use for the launching place
2008-03-04 21:35:22 sendkathy I have heard the same comments from our Media Specialist. She has a Master degree in library science yet she is not a certified teacher so teachers don't give her the credit she deserves for lesson creation. They don't value her time and take her for granted. She has to have the library open all the time so she lives in a fish bowl. It's got to be tough.
2008-03-04 21:35:23 colettec do you have RSS on your pathfinders so they can subscribe???
2008-03-04 21:35:25 CathyNelson Carolyn Foote sends warm greetings from the caucus (in TX)
2008-03-04 21:35:26 Michael.Dodes I feel your pain cs, the clerical stuff can be a major time killer and it's a shame.
2008-03-04 21:35:28 sharonp Info pimping, LOL
2008-03-04 21:35:32 Vicki Davis @ehelfant - I use netvibes
2008-03-04 21:35:41 Vicki Davis Set up one for flatclassroom - set up one for horizon
2008-03-04 21:35:46 CathyNelson she sends here greeting via twitter
2008-03-04 21:35:53 Vicki Davis they have tabs for hobbies and for term paper, etc.
2008-03-04 21:36:03 sharonp I think of it as a dashboard
2008-03-04 21:36:03 Vicki Davis Search the google news search for current events of interest.
2008-03-04 21:36:06 cheryloakes wow2 So Joyce, you helped them create a personal assistant
2008-03-04 21:36:10 CathyNelson This is what makes teh kids TRULY understand
2008-03-04 21:36:12 Vicki Davis this is an essential skill -- personal portal.
2008-03-04 21:36:21 jepcke Age of these kids?
2008-03-04 21:36:22 dianerchen I'm no longer the one in charge of everything. I put teachers in charge of their students. They learned to checkout, answer phone, and manage chaos while I work with students individually.
2008-03-04 21:36:29 Vicki Davis I have a teacher raving about igoogle and the others want it now.
2008-03-04 21:36:30 colettec love these ideas of a personal portal!!!!
2008-03-04 21:36:33 ehelfant @vicki how many kids do you have doing this
2008-03-04 21:36:34 dianerchen Ownership must be extended out.
2008-03-04 21:36:41 Vicki Davis All 10th graders.
2008-03-04 21:36:47 cheryloakes wow2 good plan dianerchen, good to share the jobs.
2008-03-04 21:36:51 Vicki Davis All 9th graders.
2008-03-04 21:36:54 dianerchen Web 2.0 grew because people took more ownership and responsibility for their roles in creation, communication.
2008-03-04 21:36:56 CathyNelson Clinton wins Rhoode Isalnd just in case u r curious
2008-03-04 21:36:56 ehelfant wow
2008-03-04 21:37:00 Vicki Davis Different content depending on th topic
2008-03-04 21:37:03 srenatee love my igoogle
2008-03-04 21:37:09 cheryloakes wow2 thanks cathynelson
2008-03-04 21:37:13 bookminder ??What app is Joyce using to have her kids build these pages?
2008-03-04 21:37:17 Vicki Davis My 9th graders blog publicly under pseudonyms.
2008-03-04 21:37:22 Vicki Davis and so they research for blog topics.
2008-03-04 21:37:22 colettec iGoogle rocks!
2008-03-04 21:37:27 jepcke Would love to create a dashboard for younger learners 3rd-8th
2008-03-04 21:37:27 Michael.Dodes I can't wait till widget design becomes more WYSIWYG
2008-03-04 21:37:30 CathyNelson @bookminder igoogle or pageflakes
2008-03-04 21:37:31 alicebarr I was in a school today (not mine) that is blocking iGoogle becasue of games :(
2008-03-04 21:37:42 Vicki Davis @alice - games are everywhere
2008-03-04 21:37:44 James.Sigler I just caught up in the chat. Whew! It's rocking.
2008-03-04 21:37:44 Vicki Davis On laptops
2008-03-04 21:37:48 Vicki Davis solitarie?
2008-03-04 21:37:52 Vicki Davis solitaire?
2008-03-04 21:38:01 alicebarr Exactly and if students choose to waste their time...
2008-03-04 21:38:04 ehelfant We are having game afternoons in our linrary.. we bought 2 wis and a playstation
2008-03-04 21:38:04 dianerchen Our new laptops were distributed to librarians with right-click disabled.
2008-03-04 21:38:08 colettec love the ideas of publishers providing widgets
2008-03-04 21:38:21 CathyNelson at SLA students proved they could chat, surf and get right back n task
2008-03-04 21:38:23 dianerchen Fear grows stronger.
2008-03-04 21:38:30 Vicki Davis I agree w/ Joyce -- they are amazingly deficient in things that I think a technologically literate person should know.
2008-03-04 21:38:43 CathyNelson we r the ones who cant handle it all
2008-03-04 21:38:46 sharonp not enough critical thinking
2008-03-04 21:38:49 vtkari you can do igoogle with grade 6-8 students
2008-03-04 21:38:51 sharonp very surface
2008-03-04 21:38:56 davidloertscher Has anyone linked teaher's assignments with accompanying librarian's tips to the kids iGoogle pages?
2008-03-04 21:38:57 Vicki Davis @alice - they can stare at the sky too are we going to block that out?
2008-03-04 21:38:58 sharonp not deep
2008-03-04 21:38:58 dianerchen We need more guides on internet safety for parents so they support us. Administrators are more afraid of parent responses and us getting them in trouble and on the local news.
2008-03-04 21:39:00 sailsmart which blogs do your schools allow? Our board blocks blogs, or most of them, but not wordpress yet. So they wouldn't be able to blog.
2008-03-04 21:39:02 PeggyG @James.Sigler--I shared your toys/purpose quote in Clarence Fisher's class on ustream tonight. Someone asked for a URL--you need to blog about it :-)
2008-03-04 21:39:02 Vicki Davis We must deal w/ the behavior!
2008-03-04 21:39:03 tischann @diane and no games on the laptops, may cause frivolilty
2008-03-04 21:39:05 dellacurtis http://www.collectivex.com is an outstanding resource for group worksites.
2008-03-04 21:39:12 srenatee I did a workshop last night w/ student teachers. the only web2.0 tools they knew were facebook and myspace! nothing else!
2008-03-04 21:39:15 malewine Vicki, just what we've said before...students are technology savvy not necessarily technology literate.
2008-03-04 21:39:16 alicebarr @vivki right on It's all about engagement!
2008-03-04 21:39:29 colettec do this same idea with all faculty members - teach them how to make iGoogle pages too
2008-03-04 21:39:31 ehelfant we have to teach design better
2008-03-04 21:39:36 dianerchen No games on our laptop immediately caused 10 of us to locate the free games that we could play even though we were to busy to play.
2008-03-04 21:39:46 srenatee new noting of delicious, flickr, google docs, etc.
2008-03-04 21:39:57 CathyNelson know enough to be DANGEROUS and misinformed
2008-03-04 21:40:03 bookminder ??Is the chat saved as a log and available after the session?
2008-03-04 21:40:13 CathyNelson @bookminder yes
2008-03-04 21:40:14 srenatee @bookminder..yes
2008-03-04 21:40:14 Vicki Davis @bookminder -- yes it is archived.
2008-03-04 21:40:17 sharonp @bookminder - YeS
2008-03-04 21:40:30 err How do you get to the archived chat?
2008-03-04 21:40:32 jepcke Just watched the youtube video shared earlier about k-12 student today. A great one. Shared it with my admin via email. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_A-ZVCjfWf8
2008-03-04 21:40:32 cheryloakes wow2 The chat and the audio are archived and published later this week at edtechtalk.com
2008-03-04 21:40:37 csitterley We have Google Apps for Education at 7-12- beginning to have students showing teachers the value of collaboration- games can be added to their personal start pages- being respectful
2008-03-04 21:40:37 johnsonmaryj Joyce, do you have a favorite information portal software, or do you give students many choices?
2008-03-04 21:40:43 sharonp http://edtechtalk.com/WomenofWeb2.0
2008-03-04 21:40:44 loonyhiker teachers taking my course this summer will have to blog and wiki
2008-03-04 21:40:45 Vicki Davis @diane -- kids will pick up a rock if there is nothing to play with -- we must deal w/ behavior.
2008-03-04 21:40:50 PeggyG Joyce's website is so loaded!! Does she have a link to any examples of her student portals they have created? Would love to see an example
2008-03-04 21:40:53 cheryloakes wow2 I usually get the audio and chat posted by Thur. AM. I put th e notice out at twitter.
2008-03-04 21:40:57 tischann but wouldn't you agree that even though students are tech savvy, they will never be able to replace the teachers because we teach our children how to learn regardless of the equipment
2008-03-04 21:40:59 joycevalenza mary, I love igoogle for that
2008-03-04 21:41:01 James.Sigler @ PeggyG I twittered it today. Math2.0: Tools-purpose=toys Toys+purpose=Learning
2008-03-04 21:41:03 sharonp All of our shows and chats are archived abt the above address
2008-03-04 21:41:04 Vicki Davis They should know how to create their own license -- what a great point!!!!
2008-03-04 21:41:05 Vicki Davis WOW!
2008-03-04 21:41:15 cheryloakes wow2 Or go to www.edtechtalk.com/womenofweb2 for the archive
2008-03-04 21:41:28 dianerchen Culture and climate rock the web.
2008-03-04 21:41:40 cheryloakes wow2 Hey Kern
2008-03-04 21:41:45 CathyNelson yep--we just reinstated a ban on cell phones today due to videos going out from school
2008-03-04 21:41:46 dianerchen What you do and what your students do is a result of your attitude.
2008-03-04 21:41:53 LindaNitsche How much are the Library Associations guiding librarians in this?
2008-03-04 21:41:54 Kern Hey Cheryl
2008-03-04 21:41:57 cheryloakes wow2 Hello David!
2008-03-04 21:41:59 PeggyG @James.Sigler--me too on twitter :-) good for you!
2008-03-04 21:42:04 djakes Hello everyone
2008-03-04 21:42:06 loonyhiker that last link didn't work is it just me?
2008-03-04 21:42:06 CathyNelson Hi DJakes
2008-03-04 21:42:09 sharonp The material and resources I create for my job at LEARN belong to LEARN
2008-03-04 21:42:12 dellacurtis Yes, we have a form where students have to give us permission to use their intellectual property.
2008-03-04 21:42:16 colettec <--- lost audio :(
2008-03-04 21:42:18 dianerchen Is everyone here an active member of AASL/ALA and their state school library association?
2008-03-04 21:42:19 malewine Yes, students need ICT instruction now more than ever and we're the ones that are critical to that instruction.
2008-03-04 21:42:27 lori a @jpecke like minds I al shared the youtube video and already heard back from one of them
2008-03-04 21:42:27 tanya link didn't work for me either
2008-03-04 21:42:36 sharonp and I have to say, I have some problems with the fact that it is put behind a walled garden for only the use of Quebec teachers
2008-03-04 21:42:39 Vicki Davis MTSU
2008-03-04 21:42:45 CathyNelson and libraries are the perfect collaborator to get the ICT instruction in
2008-03-04 21:42:56 sendkathy @CathyNelson, cell phones are banned at out HS but we still have problems. Cyber bullying, sending explicit images of fellow studnets during the school day. Bad news. Student creation gone bad.
2008-03-04 21:43:10 cheryloakes wow2 here is the link www.edtechtalk.com/womenofweb2.0 sorry I forgot the .0
2008-03-04 21:43:17 VinnieVrotny great three questions who owns information, who owns curriculum, who owns the idea?
2008-03-04 21:43:40 CathyNelson @vinnie and what is the answer to any of it?
2008-03-04 21:43:40 dianerchen who determines the lesson?
2008-03-04 21:43:42 colettec colleges are dealing with it with faculty
2008-03-04 21:43:47 dianerchen lessons and curriculum vary
2008-03-04 21:43:48 chriswherley did I miss something. NOt getting any audio?
2008-03-04 21:44:04 sharonp @vinnie - so many teachers in the world live in areas with proper PD and resources - in good conscience I have a problem with not sharing that with them
2008-03-04 21:44:06 bookminder Isn't this happening with everything they post to sites like Facebook?
2008-03-04 21:44:13 dianerchen Students vary so greatly in tech abilities and they are demanding ways to catch up to their peers.
2008-03-04 21:44:14 cheryloakes wow2 audio is at ETTA, on the edtechtalk.com page at participate live
2008-03-04 21:44:15 loonyhiker now i'll have to go listen to earlier shows! i'll be busy this week!
2008-03-04 21:44:16 CathyNelson ETT a--it wil launch your player, but you may have to click the play button
2008-03-04 21:44:23 colettec digital citizenship & creative commons should be talk for all & teachers
2008-03-04 21:44:30 sharonp WITHOUT proper PD and resources --- oops
2008-03-04 21:44:37 srenatee i found a library website that used joyce's page. copied it lock, stock, and bbarrel w/o attribution. used joyce's daughter's drawings
2008-03-04 21:44:43 CathyNelson @looneyhiker u MUST come back every week
2008-03-04 21:44:46 sharonp I speak up for CC as much as I can
2008-03-04 21:44:50 jbailey Good point about students understanding CC from the standpoint of them creating.
2008-03-04 21:44:53 CathyNelson I do too
2008-03-04 21:44:59 VinnieVrotny I believe it shifts to the individual, since it is the experience which is unique. Why schools will survive and why MIT and such are putting courseware on the web, to draw students to the experience
2008-03-04 21:45:04 loonyhiker yes ma'am i follow directions well :)
2008-03-04 21:45:12 CathyNelson teachers are so reluctnat though its just so easy to use google images they say
2008-03-04 21:45:22 dianerchen Everyone join the associations please so we can have others advocate for us.
2008-03-04 21:45:39 tewbook When I hear about all of the things that librarians are doing with tech and 2.0 tools, I just get depressed because I'm not allowed to do it at my school.
2008-03-04 21:45:42 sharonp curriki
2008-03-04 21:45:44 CathyNelson IM in Dian --SCASL, AASL, ALA
2008-03-04 21:45:47 cheryloakes wow2 looneyhiker, enjoy past shows!!! I fill my ipod and listen to shows over again too
2008-03-04 21:45:51 colettec use advanced search on flickr to look for creative commons
2008-03-04 21:45:59 tewbook Hi Diane and Tish
2008-03-04 21:46:00 djakes How come librarians don't know about Creative Commons?
2008-03-04 21:46:03 CathyNelson or Flickrcc
2008-03-04 21:46:05 dianerchen We need to communicate through all the different tools because different people prefer different means of communication.
2008-03-04 21:46:05 mkforbus I used Creative Commons in one of my National Board portfolio lessons.
2008-03-04 21:46:08 VinnieVrotny i put creative cc license on my IL-TCE presentations. I would love for people to mashup my work, just give me credit for helping them get there
2008-03-04 21:46:09 loonyhiker i'm embarrassed to say that i didn't know about creative commons until about 2 months ago after reading some blogs
2008-03-04 21:46:12 bookminder @Cathy - teachers need to know that they should lead by example. I take my staff to task on this all the time.
2008-03-04 21:46:15 Vicki Davis http://www.utsystem.edu/OGC/intellectualProperty/student.htm#pub
2008-03-04 21:46:17 cheryloakes wow2 good point colettec, spead the word.
2008-03-04 21:46:21 sharonp how silly not ot share - education should be first in line sharing openly
2008-03-04 21:46:24 tischann @tewbook I agree, because I try teaching these things to all our librarians, only to have it blocked or removed
2008-03-04 21:46:27 srenatee too many aren't reading journals, blogs, or doing the studying to learn this,
2008-03-04 21:46:31 Kern I had to show it to my super - who they showed it to the admins in my district
2008-03-04 21:46:33 CathyNelson i make that point regularly @bookminder
2008-03-04 21:46:36 sendkathy Cheryl, glad you mentioned ipod, can we get some info about e-books and how they are being used in the libraries,
2008-03-04 21:46:42 heatherloy because Flickr is bloced at most schools in SC
2008-03-04 21:46:43 matt montagne2 or use flickrstorm or behold to search cc photos
2008-03-04 21:46:55 chriswherley yeh. I couldn't get audio to work with Firefox. oops
2008-03-04 21:47:00 colettec Open Education Resources at: http://www.k12opened.com/wiki/index.php/Learn_About
2008-03-04 21:47:02 CathyNelson in our world of everyone making pts, videso, dig storytelling they NEED to use CC pix
2008-03-04 21:47:02 sailsmart we call it informed consent form. If I use a student's art work, they sign a contract to allow me to use it with clear explanation of where and how. It would be removed from website on student request.
2008-03-04 21:47:05 CathyNelson or there own
2008-03-04 21:47:10 CathyNelson their own
2008-03-04 21:47:14 VinnieVrotny you generate the excitement by bringing people to the experience
2008-03-04 21:47:26 CathyNelson too exp for school
2008-03-04 21:47:29 dellacurtis It's their brain!
2008-03-04 21:47:31 CheriT Rice University is starting a movement toward open textbooks - self-publishing
2008-03-04 21:47:31 dianerchen so much advocacy must still be done individually. Work with 1-3 people at a time in lighthearted manner to inspire others to try something new.
2008-03-04 21:47:38 matt montagne2 technically anything created is the property of the emploer I thought
2008-03-04 21:47:51 dianerchen Did you see the state choose free reading curriculum instead of textbooks today?
2008-03-04 21:47:55 VinnieVrotny as an independent school this is and idea we are toying with. Publish broadly and create a local buzz. Interesting to see where this will go
2008-03-04 21:47:56 tewbook I've had some decent luck getting some things and blogs unblocked by ENA
2008-03-04 21:47:57 Michael.Dodes I don't see how physical access to equipment translates into intellectual ownership of anything created on it.
2008-03-04 21:48:04 matt montagne2 I thought employer owend the rights to works created by employees
2008-03-04 21:48:06 CathyNelson Texas pushes mcCain over in delegates--he has won the repub nomin just incase u r curious
2008-03-04 21:48:14 matt montagne2 kindle rocks

2008-03-04 21:49:48 tischann @tewbook, but it seems sometimes that we are grasping at straws and missing the haystack sometimes. As I learn more about what is out there and what other districts are doing, bit seems that when the focus is more reactive to the technology much is lost, but when freedoms are give, much thriving and sharing of ideas occurs

2008-03-04 21:53:01 dianerchen Some kids need the mp3 players so they can jump up and down while they are listening and learning.
