Teachers Teaching Teachers #173 - EBSCO, BrainyFlix, Online Research, and More! - 10.21.09

Post-Show description:

Ron Burns from EBSCO joined us on this podcast as we continued the conversation about using databases for research, how to share research using Diigo and how to incorporate the EBSCO resources into these goals! Being big EBSCO fans, we always welcome any chance to learn more about upcoming changes and how to better use EBSCO.

We are happy that Joyce Valenza joined us in the chat room, since she started us on this question of how to use a social bookmarking site like Diigo with a library database like EBSCO. (Find out what she found noisome!)

Also joining us on this podcast was Jack Yu who creates his own brand of meaningful fun at BrainyFlix.

21:07:15 PeggyG: I saw the awesome announcement about your show from Heinnemann!! Fantastic!!
21:07:34 matt montagne: I've struggled with the problem of multiple different UIs across many database platforms...it is confusing for the students and I think one reason why they don't use them like they could (federated search can help, I suppose)
21:07:40 joycevalenza: which show?
21:07:43 SusanEttenheim: Peggy - I don't know about that???
21:07:51 PeggyG: Maggie is going to be on the Classroom 2.0 LIVE show on Saturday, Oct. 31 at 9:00am PDT--all about version 4

21:10:35 matt montagne: how can database companies change their business model to reflect the fact that information is no longer expensive??
21:10:59 joycevalenza: that's a very controversial Q
21:11:08 joycevalenza: did you see my video?
21:11:26 SusanEttenheim: matt - fred - can I call you in?
21:11:58 Fred Haas: @Susan Yes, but it is goign to take me a some time. I have my 2 yr-old at my side and I half to get to my other computer. Since I learned my headset doesn't work with my Macbook, as soon as she carshes I'll jump on my other machine.

21:18:17 SusanEttenheim: joyce are you still "blogging the research process?"
21:18:20 PeggyG: I've really enjoyed reading the students responses to each other's posts on Youth Voices--they are getting very good with incorporating research into their reflections and opinions!

21:28:53 joycevalenza: why is the itunes icon no longer on my interface?

21:31:58 Tim: real introductory content. how to use camera.
21:32:01 SusanEttenheim: oh cool tim! what have you been doing?
21:32:13 joycevalenza: thanks, peggy. i can hear!
21:32:15 Tim: then elements of photography
21:32:16 SusanEttenheim: what cameras are you using?
21:32:23 PeggyG: yeah!!!
21:32:25 Tim: like balance, rule of thirds, leading lines
21:32:33 SusanEttenheim: would you like to post some pictures and share with our groups?
21:32:40 SusanEttenheim: me too tim!
21:32:43 Tim: Our school bought a set of 10 sony point and shoots
21:32:53 SusanEttenheim: we used Sarah Sutter's Voicethread - do you know it?
21:33:01 Tim: i'm challenged now to share them - students build their own portfolios in their books
21:33:10 Tim: and we use a projector to share with everyone
21:33:14 SusanEttenheim: tim- remind us where you teach?
21:33:17 Tim: but i've not done any online sharing.
21:33:26 Tim: i'm in wellington, new zealand
21:33:40 Joel Malley: this Photojojo RSS feed isn't quite working...any suggestions?
21:33:54 SusanEttenheim: ahhh we really should share! we need students from new zealand in youth voices!!
21:34:01 Tim: Susan - don't know sarah's voicethread.
21:34:19 Tim: i've pulled up the youthvoices site - first i've heard of it today
21:34:35 SusanEttenheim: please join us!
21:34:37 PeggyG: that sounds like a fantastic contest!!
21:34:52 SusanEttenheim: joel - where are your students again?
21:35:12 carolteach4: Can you drpop in the link to brainyflix (sp) and Sara Sutter's Voice Thread
21:35:17 Joel Malley: never mindenzie...got it...thanks for the suggestion
21:35:17 joycevalenza: those may not be the best genre categories
21:35:26 Joel Malley: my students are right outside of Buffalo NY
21:35:28 Joel Malley: Cheektowaga
21:35:56 Tim: I like the idea of themes - i've been struggling at getting students to be critical of others work
21:36:00 Joel Malley: This Photojojo looks like it will make a nice Google Reader addition to Lifehacker
21:36:03 SusanEttenheim: carol - could you? it makes me nervous to open browser windows when I'm broadcasting ;0
21:36:39 SusanEttenheim: and what ages Joel?
21:36:39 carolteach4: I'll see if I can find the correct link.
21:36:50 SusanEttenheim: thanks carol
21:36:50 Paul Allison: http://youthvoices.net/searchguides
21:37:09 Joel Malley: I have seniors...one AP LIt, three Mass Media/Film Production, and one sophomore English 10
21:37:43 SusanEttenheim: joel - perfect for youthvoices too!
21:37:55 joycevalenza: ebsco is HUGE
21:37:58 carolteach4: http://www.brainyflix.com/
21:38:00 joycevalenza: something for everyone
21:38:08 carolteach4: I hope that is the right link.
21:38:09 joycevalenza: developmentally appropriate
21:38:12 SusanEttenheim: how's your sound now joyce?
21:38:16 joycevalenza: good
21:38:22 SusanEttenheim: what fixed it?
21:38:24 SusanEttenheim: great
21:38:28 PeggyG: think it is carolteach4
21:38:29 joycevalenza: the link
21:38:39 SusanEttenheim: great!
21:38:40 Joel Malley: yeah i know...i attended the presentation last year at NWP and have meant to try it out...it's currently blocked in my district (not sure what kind of filter we use)
21:39:10 SusanEttenheim: joel we've been finding that often it's actually easy to ask and get sites unblocked
21:39:29 PeggyG: the free photojojo newsletters are fantastic!! I've learned so much from them!
21:39:54 Joel Malley: i know...it wouldn't be difficult...we do the Ning Thang between my film classes but i'd love to get their films out even further and explore Youthvoices
21:40:23 joycevalenza: you can use it if you repurpose!
21:40:25 PeggyG: http://photojojo.com/subscribe/  this is the link to subscribe to the Photojojo newsletter
21:40:52 Jack - Brainyflix guy: hm, maybe we should do memorization and study tips in our newsletter, too, a l photojojo
21:40:57 PeggyG: absolutely Joyce!! they need to listen to your presentation with Buffy!
21:41:07 Jack - Brainyflix guy: tho probably tough to make as cool :/
21:41:22 joycevalenza: it's all changed!
21:41:32 Joel Malley: I see that photojojo publishes or aggregates articles on photography, but did I also hear someone say that it aggregates moving and powerful pictures from various news sources?
21:41:32 matt montagne: what are some simple, low tech solutions to give students access to our DB subscriptions at home? We have so many usernames and passwords for our different DBs
21:41:47 jackzangerle: Any suggetions for someone interested in starting with Youth Voices. A jumping off point
21:41:59 matt montagne: I wonder how ArtStor addresses image embedding
21:42:26 joycevalenza: we CAN use copyrighted images!!!!!
21:42:31 PeggyG: @jackzangerie--these are the people who can tell you about how to get started!! :-)
21:42:41 Tim: In my class I use images from Big Picture and National Geographic to start conversations - or to demonstrate a concept
21:42:50 SusanEttenheim: jack where are your students and what age?
21:42:51 PeggyG: Joyce you need to skype in :-)
21:43:20 jackzangerle: @ Susan Ettenheim NY North of the city 8th grade
21:43:45 Tim: our rules in NZ are a little different - we don't have a Fair Use concept in law here
21:44:21 joycevalenza: but the bigger issue is the value of this content
21:44:54 PeggyG: @Matt-intriguing question about ArtStor! Do you know the answer?
21:45:04 carolteach4: It is so interesting to hear that there is still such confusion about "fair use" and copyright despite all the work with Renee Hobbs and Temple University - teachers are still confused.
21:45:09 joycevalenza: same deal with artstor
21:45:15 SusanEttenheim: jack your students could be joining us in youthvoices!
21:45:21 joycevalenza: i work with renee
21:45:22 matt montagne: @PEggy...I don't, but we do have ArtStor...
21:45:54 SusanEttenheim: how interesting tim! how does it work there?
21:46:08 PeggyG: many teachers have only been taught to the checklists for using copyrighted docs--they don't understand about fair use
21:46:31 Jack - Brainyflix guy: does anyone really understand fair use?
21:46:45 jackzangerle: @joycevalenz What would be a good starting page or activity or place to participate?
21:46:49 PeggyG: Yes!
21:46:58 SusanEttenheim: so joyce - you can't use any artstore image online?
21:47:15 carolteach4: I think that the current status of our understanding of fair use and copyright would be a great topic for a future show.
21:47:54 Joel Malley: I prefer to use a common sense approach to copyright...it has no basis in law...I just follow my gut feeling and hope i don't get sued
21:48:05 Jack - Brainyflix guy: peggy, do you think our brainypics count as fair use?
21:48:09 joycevalenza: http://copyrightfriendly.wikispaces.com
21:48:10 SusanEttenheim: would that work for you tim?
21:48:15 PeggyG: there are also tons of primary source images on the internet archives-http://archive.org
21:48:28 SusanEttenheim: I follow Joyce's wiki! It's great
21:48:36 PeggyG: I think so Jack but it depends on your purpose :-)
21:48:47 Jack - Brainyflix guy: evil purposes of course muahahaha
21:48:53 Tim: @susan - "fair use" isn't written up in law, as I understand it is in the US. there is a new legislation going through parliament about digital rights. A LOT of debate by all sides
21:48:57 PeggyG: :-)
21:49:13 PeggyG: you can find primary source audio on the internet archives too
21:49:45 SusanEttenheim: interesting... so say someone is posting about a famous photographer - can he or she just grab the photo from the Internet and post it on a class or personal blog?
21:49:46 joycevalenza: you guys have to pull together and create a common message
21:50:04 SusanEttenheim: who joyce?
21:50:11 joycevalenza: the industry!
21:50:17 Joel Malley: Flickr has a good collection of Creative Commons images as wellflickr.com/groups/creativecommons/
21:50:20 SusanEttenheim: ha!
21:50:32 SusanEttenheim: and we'll all share all the money in the world too?
21:50:35 Tim: Citation is required, and I discuss the elements of creative commons and "fair use" with my class
21:50:41 joycevalenza: we had a huge conversation about this at the SLJ Summit
21:50:58 Tim: www.digitalnz.org is a great new resource being developed by the Library of NZ
21:50:59 joycevalenza: we even have the promise of a professional psa
21:51:12 SusanEttenheim: can you imagine trying to launch the idea of a library today?
21:51:26 SusanEttenheim: imagine you just buy one book and everyone can share it!?
21:52:07 matt montagne: I believe people are reasonable...absoultely...I like Jack's approach
21:52:17 SusanEttenheim: yes I really do too
21:52:37 Tim: Susan - i'm definitely no expert on it - like Joel - I try to be fair with content and be reasonable - the spirit of "fair use" I guess
21:52:58 SusanEttenheim: yes I like that!
21:53:23 joycevalenza: EBSCO does a great job with RSS!
21:53:29 joycevalenza: and alerts
21:54:15 PeggyG: http://copyrightconfusion.wikispaces.com/Reasoning This is an excellent form to help you decide whether something meets the criteria for fair use--from Kristin Hokanson
21:54:54 joycevalenza: i want compatibility with other 3rd party apps!
21:55:22 SusanEttenheim: like diigo joyce?
21:55:50 joycevalenza: diigo, noodlebib, turnitin, etc.
21:55:59 Joel Malley: I just think that copyright is outdated in terms of remix and reuse. If a student is making a film for class and needs to use a song to help tell a story, I'm going to be ok with that because from where I'm standing it doesn't hurt the copyright holder.  The students (allegedly) paid for the music, they should be able to use it as they see fit.  I do, however, strongly encourage freeplaymusic.com and have the creative commons discussion
21:56:14 joycevalenza: joel. it's all changed!
21:56:24 Joel Malley: @joyce, what do you mean?
21:56:37 joycevalenza: the new guidelines encourage remix!
21:57:44 RonBurns: thanks Joyce, glad to be here
21:57:58 Joel Malley: do I still need to limit song clips to 15 seconds or whatever?
21:58:03 joycevalenza: NO!
21:58:10 joycevalenza: that's over
21:58:13 carolteach4: Lawrence Lessig and Free Culture - I listened to some of his podcasts from a couple of years ago - anything new from him?
21:58:16 Joel Malley: tres cool...i'm going to have to read that wiki...
21:58:26 joycevalenza: as long as you repurpose, add value
21:58:47 joycevalenza: we should talk
21:59:00 carolteach4: From what I understand those time limitations were totally bogus - made up with no basis in law
21:59:18 RonBurns: RSS feeds on EBSCOhost are a great way to distribute a search topic, result list, etc. Many libraries are strating to embed them into their library web sites and subject guides.
21:59:41 joycevalenza: we embed with guerilla tactices
21:59:44 joycevalenza: tactics
21:59:58 joycevalenza: pathfinders
22:00:24 PeggyG: http://www.centerforsocialmedia.org/resources/publications/recut_reframe...
22:01:17 joycevalenza: no so much
22:01:23 joycevalenza: not
22:01:26 PeggyG: that's the key-repurpose and add value!
22:01:28 Joel Malley: where are the guidelines for repurposing and adding value?
22:01:42 Joel Malley: i mean...where's an article or resource i could print and read
22:01:49 PeggyG: the word transformative needs to become part of our vocabulary :-)
22:02:01 Joel Malley: and shove in my school's copyright snob's face
22:02:08 joycevalenza: and please don't undervalue the amazing content of subscription databases
22:02:18 SusanEttenheim: carol do you have that temple link handy?
22:02:19 joycevalenza: my kids love database RSS!
22:02:31 PeggyG: use Joyce's link--tons of resources for the rationale for fair use and repurposing
22:02:39 SusanEttenheim: joyce where do they keep track of that?
22:02:42 PeggyG: http://copyrightfriendly.wikispaces.com/
22:02:52 Joel Malley: will do...sorry but i must have missed it...too busy blogging and checking out all these links
22:03:17 Joel Malley: going back and copying/pasting
22:03:40 PeggyG: this chat log will be posted along with the recording so you can get the links later if you missed some
22:03:57 Tim: Joel - this is from the EFF: www.teachingcopyright.org
22:04:17 joycevalenza: do you realize that the library is not just space?
22:04:22 Joel Malley: Muchos gracias
22:04:30 joycevalenza: they are providing your resources!
22:04:43 joycevalenza: and the selection!!!!
22:04:43 PeggyG: http://edtechtalk.com/TeachersTeachingTeachers
22:05:02 carolteach4: Interesting how MIT put content of all their courses online for FREE -
22:05:17 joycevalenza: I am having trouble believing this
22:05:23 joycevalenza: I may have to leave
22:05:44 joycevalenza: you have ignored lots of the content you might have used
22:05:58 Joel Malley: Thanks Peggy...I'm blogging about this conversation on our ning for the Western New York Writing Project and have shared these links and resources, as well as a link to the edtalk room
22:06:01 Tim: In my school - which was built in 2001 - the building was designed around the library
22:06:06 PeggyG: I spent my time getting microfiche copies :-)
