 19:44:49  mrsdurff -> Room 1: there is one report
 19:45:14  Lee-AnneHK -> Room 1: I must apologise for not reading this years one yet
 19:45:17  alicebarr -> Room 1: @Connie not sure when K-12 comes out. It was March/April I think last year
 19:45:36  bobsprankle -> Room 1: http://wp.nmc.org/horizon2010/
 19:46:21  Scott Shelhart -> Room 1: Hi Peggy
 19:46:23  alicebarr -> Room 1: Hi Peggy
 19:46:32  PeggyG -> Room 1: Hi all
 19:46:36  PeggyG -> Room 1: sorry I'm late!
 19:46:44  bobsprankle -> Room 1: hi peggy!

 19:47:06  alicebarr -> Room 1: No problem Peggy we just started
 19:47:18  PeggyG -> Room 1: Is the topic tonight about the Horizon Report?
 19:47:39  Connie Sitterley -> Room 1: Yes Peggy
 19:48:27  alicebarr -> Room 1: @Peggy yes
 19:48:33  PeggyG -> Room 1: love those descriptions :-)

 19:50:00  mrsdurff -> Room 1: http://www.nmc.org/publications/2010-horizon-report
 19:50:25  PeggyG -> Room 1: thanks!
 19:50:35  cheryloakes~ -> Room 1: hello, we will not be in the chat room too much since we are really breaking apart the report, chat away
 19:51:21  mrsdurff -> Room 1: hi carol
 19:51:24  Connie Sitterley -> Room 1: Most schools in my area are still banning
 19:51:37  carolteach4 -> Room 1: cell phones are still banned during school hours at our school
 19:51:50  carolteach4 -> Room 1: Hi, mrsdurff
 19:52:02  Connie Sitterley -> Room 1: Lilly has mobile barking...
 19:52:10  mrsdurff -> Room 1: my school bans cellphones and i ignore this
 19:52:17  mrsdurff -> Room 1: hi Lilly!
 19:52:32  mrsdurff -> Room 1: wb scott
 19:52:54  mrsdurff -> Room 1: polleverywhere with cellphones is cheaper too
 19:52:55  Scott Shelhart -> Room 1: Tnx.  I used the Promethean voters this week in 3rd grade
 19:52:58  alicebarr -> Room 1: Lilly says hi
 19:53:05  mrsdurff -> Room 1: :)
 19:53:14  carolteach4 -> Room 1: There was an 8th grade (two teams - about 200 kids)experiment last year when kids were using ipods and their own laptops and iphones - nothing bad happened. In fact, a lot of good happened.
 19:54:16  carolteach4 -> Room 1: I don't use my iPhone much at all during school - too busy - usually locked in my purse in my filing cabinet
 19:54:24  Connie Sitterley -> Room 1: I still have no cell connectivity in my home area-must drive 5 miles to use-some of our school also have no cell connection, so not an option there
 19:54:34  carolteach4 -> Room 1: I am not at all impressed with the iPad
 19:54:42  mrsdurff -> Room 1: my cellphone is in my pocket when not in my hand
 19:55:39  Connie Sitterley -> Room 1: THere are now leveled reading books available in an app for the ipod touch
 19:55:47  PeggyG -> Room 1: it's amazing that there is a camera on a nano!
 19:55:49  cheryloakes~ -> Room 1: thanks for keeping the chat going
 19:56:23  carolteach4 -> Room 1: It's all about digital ethics - has to be taught early and continuously - too bad a couple of kids misuse cameras on phones and spoils it for everyone.
 19:57:12  Scott Shelhart -> Room 1: Kids still write notes and write on bathroom walls.  We don't ban pencils..... we teach how to use the tools.
 19:57:36  carolteach4 -> Room 1: My principal just got an iPhone -can connect into the student database - thinks it's great
 19:58:08  carolteach4 -> Room 1: @scott - yes, Scott, but the pencil scrawl is in one place - not sent all over the internet
 19:58:25  Maureen -> Room 1: What I thought was interesting was all the text book companies who are signing up with apple for the ipad. Heard some interesting report on NPR tonight re html5- youtube, etc will display video with html5, so the lack of flash won't be as big a problem.
 19:58:41  carolteach4 -> Room 1: I agree with you though. We must teach the kids to use the tools correctly and ethically
 19:58:41  Connie Sitterley -> Room 1: Higher Order thinking skills require more thought to create activities and questioning and some teachers are not comfortable working at that level
 19:58:42  Scott Shelhart -> Room 1: True, but there is no digital trail on a pencil drawing.....there is on a digital message.
 19:59:43  Maureen -> Room 1: Giving open computer quiz tomorrow- 7th grade, information fluency. Don't care if they can google it- can they use it?
 20:00:31  PeggyG -> Room 1: there were so many conversations at Educon about the topic of teaching kids in different ways!
 20:00:39  carolteach4 -> Room 1: When teachers design projects that are unique and individualized, it cuts way down on the problems of plagiarism and cheating. For example, 7th grade English teacher had students make a PhotoStory3 comparing themes in the The Pearl with themes in a book they were reading for pleasure.
 20:00:47  cheryloakes~ -> Room 1: good for you Maureen, let them use the information
 20:01:19  PeggyG -> Room 1: I really liked Rodd Lucier's session on Let's Ban Chalk.
 20:01:45  Maureen -> Room 1: @Peggy- I went to Rodd's session at educon- it was fun
 20:02:25  Maureen -> Room 1: My 1st reaction was blah! I was looking for a computer- not an e-reader. Still waiting for more info
 20:02:39  Connie Sitterley -> Room 1: I tried to get librarians to try kindle, but their fear is management-
 20:02:58  PeggyG -> Room 1: I saw him give the same presentation virtually in Canada this week and thought he did such a great job demonstrating the potential of technology for learning. Loved his enthusiasm!
 20:03:33  cheryloakes~ -> Room 1: oh, Peggy, I just saw this Let's ban chalk
 20:03:35  PeggyG -> Room 1: I'm sure some of the missing things in the iPad will be coming soon. I'll wait for the next iteration. :-)
 20:03:40  Maureen -> Room 1: @carolteach4- I had kids use mind maps for the Pearl- or any tool of their choice... One used goanimate- it was really good!
 20:03:56  Connie Sitterley -> Room 1: I have a kindle and it is nice to carry when travelling but I don't use it much otherwise
 20:04:35  PeggyG -> Room 1: Rodd talked about a new tool for me-iPadio-phone podcasting that allows you to record and send directly to your blog--they call them phlogs :-)
 20:04:46  PeggyG -> Room 1: http://www.ipadio.com
 20:04:54  Maureen -> Room 1: This may be silly- but my eyes get tired reading on the screen- esp on itouch and even the netbook. If textbooks are all on the screen- what are we doing to our eyes?
 20:05:22  PeggyG -> Room 1: you can upload recordings to ipadio and can be longer than the usual 5 min podcasts from other sites--think he said 60 mins
 20:05:39  mrsdurff -> Room 1: i prefer reading on screen
 20:05:40  Scott Shelhart -> Room 1: I still like the feel of a book in my hand.
 20:05:46  PeggyG -> Room 1: I love using my Kindle--definitely great for traveling and vacations but I enjoy it at home too!
 20:05:48  mrsdurff -> Room 1: although i do enlarge txt
 20:06:05  PeggyG -> Room 1: I enlarge the text too :-)
 20:06:16  mrsdurff -> Room 1: i love books too though
 20:06:17  PeggyG -> Room 1: I like accessing blog posts on my kindle too
 20:06:26  Connie Sitterley -> Room 1: The ability to enlarge text gets better each year I get closer to 60
 20:08:31  Connie Sitterley -> Room 1: Students have been showing the teachers how to work collaboratively with Google Apps
 20:10:03  alicebarr -> Room 1: @Connie How great that students show the teachers
 20:10:06  PeggyG -> Room 1: I got to hear Colin Powell speak today and it was fascinating to hear him describe himself as someone who grew up analog and thanks to his grandson he's becoming digital. His grandson told him he should get on Facebook and he said why would I want to do that? His grandson told him he was already on there and he had 15,000 followers. :-)
 20:10:41  Connie Sitterley -> Room 1: @Alice-and great also that the teachers are willing to be shown-recent change for some
 20:11:16  alicebarr -> Room 1: @connie yup! Good stuff!
 20:11:44  carolteach4 -> Room 1: @Connie - my selling points to the teachers is that Google apps (docs, sites, presentations, etc.) is so student-centered; they can turn the responsibility for the learning over to the kids.
 20:12:34  carolteach4 -> Room 1: I had students from a Spanish class in the lab writing conversations collaboratively using Google Docs - will finish from different locations at home
 20:12:49  Connie Sitterley -> Room 1: We have been GApps for Ed for over 2 years-students did the staff development for the apps and have been embracing its use so teachers kind of have had to
 20:13:59  Connie Sitterley -> Room 1: My 88 year old MIL really enjoys wii bowling-competitive
 20:14:08  carolteach4 -> Room 1: @Alice - oh my gosh. Just listen to t.v. - can't get through a show without references to blogs, twitter, websites, etc. It's in the real world - schools are so slowly catching up.
 20:15:28  carolteach4 -> Room 1: Did anyone accept President Obama's twitter invite to join a conversation this evening?
 20:15:31  carolteach4 -> Room 1: I missed it.
 20:15:49  Connie Sitterley -> Room 1: We have an ipod touch in the hands of student for assistive tech and she is making wonderful gains with it
 20:16:36  matt montagne -> Room 1: hey y'all
 20:16:45  alicebarr -> Room 1: Hi Matt
 20:16:49  Connie Sitterley -> Room 1: Hi Matt
 20:16:49  matt montagne -> Room 1: we on the ett a??
 20:16:51  Scott Shelhart -> Room 1: Hi Matt
 20:16:58  Connie Sitterley -> Room 1: Yes Matt
 20:17:12  matt montagne -> Room 1: alice, scott, connie, howdy
 20:17:17  carolteach4 -> Room 1: Hey, Matt. How's the weather in sunny CA. We are really cold here in the Northeast.
 20:17:18  mrsdurff -> Room 1: hey matt
 20:17:26  matt montagne -> Room 1: hey carol!
 20:17:32  matt montagne -> Room 1: weather out here is rainy
 20:17:34  mrsdurff -> Room 1: and expecting snow
 20:17:38  PeggyG -> Room 1: Hi Matt
 20:17:40  matt montagne -> Room 1: it has been a rainy winter
 20:17:43  matt montagne -> Room 1: hey peggy
 20:17:56  matt montagne -> Room 1: so what is the 411 on horizon??
 20:18:05  Connie Sitterley -> Room 1: Wordle mentioned there is easy sell to staff because of ease of use
 20:18:27  matt montagne -> Room 1: nice audio on the stream here!
 20:18:40  cheryloakes~ -> Room 1: thanks matt, we had some glitches in th beginning
 20:19:00  PeggyG -> Room 1: I'm loving this overview and exploration of the Horizon Report!! I can't wait to read the whole thing!!
 20:19:15  cheryloakes~ -> Room 1: peggyyou are the best cheerleader
 20:19:27  matt montagne -> Room 1: is it publsihed using comment press again??
 20:19:42  Connie Sitterley -> Room 1: Data Analysis is not a fav subject for tchrs but maybe some of these tools would help
 20:20:02  matt montagne -> Room 1: data analysis is really, really messy. Do schools have time for it??
 20:20:17  PeggyG -> Room 1: Wordle has so much potential for everyone--not just students! I can see them using it as a tool to help them synthesize reading/research in college :-)
 20:20:43  Connie Sitterley -> Room 1: Usually DA is a thing forced into a meeting that folks don't want to attend
 20:21:23  PeggyG -> Room 1: My daughter, who is a Regional Human Resource Director called me a couple of days ago to ask me about Wordle and used it to create an awesome Wordle summarizing key points from a week long conference she participated in.
 20:21:25  matt montagne -> Room 1: yep, looks like the format is comment press again...I'm a big fan of this wordpress theme...the text is locked, but allows interaction
 20:21:50  matt montagne -> Room 1: does anyone have any concerns about some of the organizations behind horizon??
 20:21:51  Connie Sitterley -> Room 1: Open content is also a foreign thing for some tchrs-hard to get them even to share lessons
 20:22:01  matt montagne -> Room 1: does anyone question these organization motives??
 20:22:30  PeggyG -> Room 1: sounds like you do Matt--share them
 20:22:53  Connie Sitterley -> Room 1: @Matt-are you asking if we critically analyse what we read?
 20:23:19  mrsdurff -> Room 1: don't we do that now?
 20:23:27  PeggyG -> Room 1: I heard Lucy Gray comment on that too
 20:23:47  matt montagne -> Room 1: does anyone have the link to the horizon organization?
 20:23:49  PeggyG -> Room 1: Matt do you think it's commercially driven?
 20:24:08  matt montagne -> Room 1: I can't find the link to the list of the orgs right now, but I do question the motives a bit...
 20:24:52  PeggyG -> Room 1: isn't it New Media Consortium and Educause?
 20:24:56  Connie Sitterley -> Room 1: I think that we use this report to help us to develop a focus and use additional resources to guide our thoughts
 20:25:12  mrsdurff -> Room 1: matt --> http://www.nmc.org/pdf/2010-Horizon-Report.pdf
 20:25:37  matt montagne -> Room 1: really, I'm just asking the question...that's all
 20:25:41  mrsdurff -> Room 1: matt is a critical thinker
 20:26:03  matt montagne -> Room 1: actually, it looks like it is mostly higher ed
 20:26:10  PeggyG -> Room 1: http://horizon.wiki.nmc.org/2010+Horizon+Project+Advisory+Board This is the advisory board
 20:26:12  matt montagne -> Room 1: no, I'm not really durff...trying to be a bit more of one

 20:26:48  PeggyG -> Room 1: :-)
 20:26:58  PeggyG -> Room 1: you're teasing us Cheryl!
 20:27:04  carolteach4 -> Room 1: Is anyone going to Celebration of Teaching and Learning in NYC March 5 and 6. I got a free invite, so I'm going on Friday. It would be so cool to meet some of you in person there.
 20:27:37  PeggyG -> Room 1: I'm going to CUE in Palm Springs at that time-March 4-6
 20:27:46  bobsprankle -> Room 1: http://pdfmyurl.com/
 20:27:53  matt montagne -> Room 1: awesome!
 20:27:58  carolteach4 -> Room 1: Oh, Peggy - you will probably be warmer than I will.

 20:28:34  PeggyG -> Room 1: I'm sure I will--I'm really looking forward to CUE---some great presenters and an edubloggercon session too :-)
