Teachers Teaching Teachers #186 - Texas in the house with Liz Stephens and Kerry Ballast on doing digital make-overs - 02.10.10

Post-Show description:

This podcast is another in a series of Teachers Teaching Teachers shows to feature the authors of a recent outcrop of books on new media and literacy (Copyright Clarity: 184, 135, The Digital Writing Workshop: 172, 171, 170, Teaching the New Writing: 157156, 155, Teaching Writing Using Blogs, Wikis, and other Digital Tools: 138)  Perhaps we have the makings of a new discipline here, or at least a budding new branch on the tree of academic inquiry. See the National Writing Project's list at Teaching Now: Digital Writing Books. What would you add to this list? Let us know by adding a comment below.

On this episode of Teachers Teaching Teachers we were excited to have a conversation with Liz Stephens and Kerry Ballast about their new book, Using Technology to Improve Adolescent Writing: Digital Make-Overs for Writing Lessons.

Stephens and Ballast guide teachers in how to successfully implement technology for writing across the curriculum and create engaging lesson plans. They outline four frames of writing–inside writing, responsive writing, purposeful writing, and social action writing–and present student-centered and inquiry-based reading/writing lessons to connect real-world writing to content area standards. The result is a state-of the-art resource for helping teachers teach every student to write inside and outside of the classroom.

Liz Campbell Stephens teaches graduate courses in Educational Technology and is Director of the Office of Educator Preparation at Texas State University-San Marcos. She serves on the National Writing Project’s Board of Directors and was Director of the Central Texas Writing Project for 11 years. She co-authored Technology, Reading, and Language Arts and has written numerous chapters and papers on technology and literacy.  Liz is former high school English teacher and brings that experience to her work as a teacher educator, federal programs director, and consultant. Her research has centered on literacy, technology, and teacher education.

Kerry Ballast is a Teacher Consultant for the Central Texas Writing Project and a secondary English language arts teacher with 14 years classroom experience. She has worked with students in grades 6-12 to explore various forms of writing, both traditional and digital. Currently, she works for the Texas Education Agency.

We were also joined by English teacher, Joel Malley who teaches at Cheektowaga Central School District, near Buffalo, NY. Joel is also the Tech Liaison for the Western New York Writing Project at Canisius College. Troy Hicks had a couple of things to say as well. Troy is the director of the Chippewa River Writing Project at Central Michigan University.

21:02:48 Ilka: There are several palindrome dates this year.
21:03:00 SusanEttenheim: jenny - what do you mean?
21:03:04 SusanEttenheim: since jan?
21:03:11 Ilka: Snow day for us today and tomorrow.
21:03:21 jenny: There were 2 days in session but I was at a conference
21:03:23 SusanEttenheim: ohh ilka lucky you
21:03:26 Wendy: me too. today and tomorrow
21:03:37 Ilka: Philly was hit by both big storms. Poor things.
21:03:37 jenny: We've been out all week
21:03:45 SusanEttenheim: jenny - how could that be no school? for 10 days?
21:03:51 SusanEttenheim: ahh
21:03:52 SusanEttenheim: yes
21:03:54 SusanEttenheim: wow
21:04:10 SusanEttenheim: true this is only the 10th haha!
21:04:25 SusanEttenheim: hi peggy welcome!
21:04:26 Ilka: Hello, Peggy
21:04:34 jenny: Hi peggy
21:04:35 PeggyG: Hi-great to see you
21:04:47 Paul Allison: http://www.nwp.org/cs/public/print/doc/board/stephens
21:04:50 SusanEttenheim: glad you made it through the snow peggy..

21:05:43 Ilka: Me too.
21:05:47 Wendy: audio choppy for me too
21:05:56 SusanEttenheim: hummaudio seems ok here. - everyone else?
21:06:00 Ilka: Uh..the choppy part.  I love cold weather.
21:06:20 PeggyG: yes my audio cut out and had to rebuffer, but came back
21:06:34 jenny: Please put the title of the book into the chat.
21:06:48 jenny: hi sara
21:06:54 sarabeauchamp-hicks: hi!
21:06:55 jenny: hello elyse
21:07:01 SusanEttenheim: hi sara and elyse welcome!
21:07:02 ElyseEA: Hi everyone
21:07:06 SusanEttenheim: please introduce yourself!
21:07:07 Ilka: Hi there, new arrivals.
21:07:07 Wendy: hi
21:08:04 sarabeauchamp-hicks: Hi everyone!  Sara from Michigan! MSU doc student in Education Tech & CRWP
21:08:09 PeggyG: Book: Using Technology to Improve Adolescent Writing: Digital Make-Overs for Writing Lessons
21:08:11 SusanEttenheim: wow I think the meeting that I'm going to tomorrow is about the same ideas!
21:08:26 jenny: thanks peggy
21:08:29 SusanEttenheim: but more on a school level
21:08:31 Ilka: I agree that pushing teachers who are not comfortable with technology can actually sabotage the process.
21:08:33 SusanEttenheim:  thank you peggy!
21:08:43 SusanEttenheim: yes ilka how true
21:09:01 SusanEttenheim: hi hicktro!
21:09:03 SusanEttenheim: welcome
21:09:10 ElyseEA: Great to see so many friends here at TTT --
21:09:17 Ilka: Hi there, hicktro
21:09:19 PeggyG: what an exciting message she is sharing!!
21:09:49 hickstro: Hi Susan and everyone!
21:09:54 jenny: hello
21:10:12 SusanEttenheim: please introduce yourself!
21:10:28 PeggyG: that is such a wise strategy for beginning to incorporate technology to enhance teaching and learning!
21:10:36 jenny: Once you bring in tech to lessons, the students can really keep it going!
21:11:17 jenny: I've had a tendency to hold back sometimes and my students remind me of their competence!
21:11:59 jenny: Administrators can be a real stumbling block
21:12:28 SusanEttenheim: jenny - your 2nd graders?
21:12:35 PeggyG: teachers often don't realize/understand how they can incorporate required standards using tech projects
21:12:44 SusanEttenheim: hi joel welcome!
21:12:57 SusanEttenheim: where and what do you teach?
21:13:04 jenny: Amazon has only 5 books in stock
21:13:18 hickstro: This is Troy Hicks, Chippewa River Writing Project (trying to overcome some technical difficulties with all my web browsers tonight!)
21:13:28 Wendy: I have found that anything I have brought to my classroom the students have been thrilled to work on and it is been such an easy way to build interest and enthusiasm.
21:13:48 SusanEttenheim: what kinds of things have you done wendy?
21:13:52 PeggyG: Silvia Tolisano has a fantastic blog post about how standards are addressed with technology--excellent posters on this site http://langwitches.org/blog/2009/10/19/we-podcasted-today-so-did-you-lea...
21:14:01 Ilka: I poofed.  Sorry.
21:14:05 ElyseEA: Yes, the frame is very interesting.  I'm hoping we'll hear more about that.
21:14:47 Wendy: We have a class blog for a lot of Language Arts writing-mostly response to literature. We have worked on a wiki for poetry writing and sharing as well a one open to anyone for book reviews.
21:15:29 ElyseEA: Thanks, Susan.  Sometimes the resistance is well founded, and working through it can take your thinking to a deeper level than if you didn't have the resistance.
21:15:31 Ilka: I had kids blog while we were watching a video in class.  That was so exciting and the kids' posts were deep and meaningful.
21:15:33 PeggyG: @Wendy--those are wonderful activities!!
21:15:50 SusanEttenheim: how true elyse!
21:16:16 SusanEttenheim: Ilka what kinds of expectations/guidelines did you set?
21:16:20 SusanEttenheim: welcome back joel
21:16:27 Wendy: @Peggy--the blog has been a great experience. The kids really have thoughtful things to say and it has allowed a wider range of people to be successful.
21:16:29 PeggyG: Scott Snyder did a great presentation on Classroom 2.0 LIVE last Sat. on backchanneling in the classroom and he had lots of great examples of how it helped engage all students in the room
21:16:50 SusanEttenheim: I saw that Peggy - that's hard stuff!
21:16:54 Joel Malley: Sorry Susan.  Safari is being wonky, Chrome wouldn't work, so I had to go back to Firefox.  I teach English 10, AP Lit, and Mass Media/Film Production outside of Buffalo NY
21:16:58 jenny: This was unfortunate but meaningful - we had an administrator unexpectedly pass away in November.  I added a tribute page and the students really contributed some heartfelt words.
21:17:10 Wendy: I also had the experience of more writing when blogging and more thoughtful--that public aspect is powerful.
21:17:35 PeggyG: @jenny--that's a perfect example of authentic writing!! very powerful!
21:18:01 Ilka: They had to post three times each over the two days we watched.  The comment had to be appropriate and related to the content.  They were allowed to pose a question, make a comment, or comment to another student's comment/question.  I have six classes.  My IEP class (24 students/11 with IEPs) posted 235 comments.  They are fantastic.
21:18:20 PeggyG: @Ilka--that's a great process! so glad you shared it!
21:18:20 SusanEttenheim: wow ilka!
21:18:34 Wendy: Great
21:18:44 ElyseEA: I think the more public nature of the writing also contributes a sense that writing is more important, more part of the 'environment' because of the way it can be references and brought into conversations that go beyond the classroom.
21:18:51 SusanEttenheim: joel my browsers were being wonky before too
21:19:36 jenny: I soooo agree Elyse
21:20:31 ElyseEA: Center for Digital Storytelling (go Berkeley!) has a great website: www.storycenter.org
21:20:38 Ilka: The best part was seeing the students post in the evening, outside of class, without any comments from me.  I was shocked by that.
21:20:44 SusanEttenheim: jenny did you say you have 6-8th graders after school?
21:20:51 PeggyG: editing and revising is often resisted by students and with these ideas the students WANT to make them better :-)
21:21:05 SusanEttenheim: joel do you have skype?
21:21:16 jenny: Yes, I get to spend about 40 minutes with each group once a week. It's a challenge, but fabulous
21:21:28 ElyseEA: BTW -- sound coming through fine on iTunes streaming.
21:21:39 SusanEttenheim: ahh that's very different from your 2nd graders!
21:21:45 SusanEttenheim: ilka do you have skype?
21:21:47 jenny: you betcha!
21:21:55 Ilka: Of course. LOL
21:22:01 SusanEttenheim: can I call you?
21:22:04 Joel Malley: Yes, I have Skype
21:22:04 SusanEttenheim: into the call?
21:22:12 Ilka: really?
21:22:19 SusanEttenheim: joel what is your user name?
21:22:23 hickstro: Paul's question is pertinent -- it has come up for me in a variety of professional development contexts from administrators and teachers.
21:22:26 Joel Malley: one second
21:22:33 SusanEttenheim: yes, you and joel should just share your comments yourself!
21:22:41 SusanEttenheim: and anyone else... hi gail!
21:22:56 Ilka: Gail! Hi!! xoxox
21:23:03 Wendy: I think a lot of times you improve writing by improving thinking skills and practicing telling a story and talking about ideas. And if the writing isn't alwasy as essay, that's still writing.
21:23:06 Gail Desler: Hi Susan.  Hi Ilka!
21:23:10 hickstro: That is one question that I have... to what extent are we able to make claims about how students' writing -- all kinds of writing -- improves when they are engaged in digital writing, too.
21:23:25 SusanEttenheim: troy can I call you in skype?
21:23:32 SusanEttenheim: do you have headsets handy?
21:24:05 ElyseEA: this is a significant question -- one I get alllll the time at the NWP.  I think the key is that writing IS now in digital environments.  it's not 'does technology make writing (without technology) better' but rather 'now that we write with/in technology we need to understand what makes THAT writing better.
21:24:08 hickstro: Susan -- yes I can.
21:24:08 PeggyG: such an important question @hickstro! for many administrators it isn't enough to improve student motivation for writing--they want to know it actually improves their writing
21:24:17 jenny: I have students who, although in 6th grade, write like my 2nd graders.  They take their writing more seriously when they have an audience
21:24:31 hickstro: @Elyse -- no argument from me there, for sure!
21:24:33 Ilka: I don't have a headset, but my laptop has a microphone.  You may already have me on your Skype.  I was on last year when you did a show about the Holocaust Educators Network.
21:24:33 Paul Allison: http://www.allynbaconmerrill.com/store/product.aspx?isbn=0131587358
21:25:22 hickstro: I suppose, however, that I keep coming back to this question, knowing that I believe writing is digital now, but still wondering how we can "prove" that students' writing is "better" (depending on how we want to measure "better")
21:25:26 SusanEttenheim: ilka we need you to have headsets so we don't get the feedback.. do you have that?
21:25:27 ElyseEA: @hicktro  -- Yes, we're both Digital Isers, right?  :D
21:25:38 SusanEttenheim: troy is your skype on? I'm having trouble finding you
21:25:41 hickstro: @Elyse - Indeed!
21:25:46 Ilka: Not at home. Sorry.  I have a bunch at school. LOL
21:26:00 sarabeauchamp-hicks: I agree, Elyse.  We are writing in the digital environment, so we need to understand that process.
21:26:02 SusanEttenheim: next time :)
21:26:05 Ilka: But, that's okay.
21:26:08 hickstro: @Susan -- almost! My Mac is acting crazy tonight. Bad time with application switching.
21:26:19 SusanEttenheim: it's the weather!
21:26:35 ElyseEA: @susan -- we can blame everything on the weather tonight.
21:26:36 Joel Malley: susan, my skype name is buriedinwires
21:26:36 sarabeauchamp-hicks: @hickstro You can use my laptop! ;)
21:26:48 PeggyG: their book really sounds fantastic!!
21:26:54 Joel Malley: no headset...but headphones/mic/quiet room
21:26:55 hickstro: Actually, I usually just blame Comcast
21:26:57 Joel Malley: if that workds
21:27:03 hickstro: But, tonight it is my machine, too!
21:27:08 ElyseEA: See how once emoticons start...they can't be stopped:o
21:27:25 ElyseEA: I think I'm guity
21:27:45 hickstro: :-/
21:28:01 Gail Desler: Liz's "thinking in frames" is huge shift - but something I see happening with students
21:28:05 sarabeauchamp-hicks: XD
21:28:33 sarabeauchamp-hicks: (this one: XD, confounds me a bit.  Used a lot by our 16 year old though)
21:28:50 Ilka: I love how kids use emoticons.  I wonder what would happen if I asked the kids to text a message complete with emoticons as prewriting, then have them reqrite using words to express the emoticons.
21:29:03 PeggyG: I find if I float my chat window I have better luck clicking on links (click on the double blue doc image 3rd from right)
21:29:11 Ilka: It's a scrunchy face smile.
21:29:13 ElyseEA: @Gail  Hi Gail.  I think you might have heard the folks from Liz's site present the frames at the Digital Is resources meeting last year.  I remember you found it powerful back then.
21:29:33 SusanEttenheim: joel you'll need to mute if you type please
21:29:49 Ilka: See, the X is the eyes squeezed shut.
21:30:02 Gail Desler: @ElyseEA Yes, her insights were a huge "take away" for me.
21:31:10 sarabeauchamp-hicks: @Ilka Have you seen this? http://www.ted.com/talks/rives_tells_a_story_of_mixed_emoticons.html
21:31:25 ElyseEA: Amusing video with emoticons:  www.youtube.com/watch?v=nFSCrsqebVg
21:31:36 SusanEttenheim: thanks sara!
21:31:45 Ilka: No, but I love Ted videos.  I'll check it out.
21:32:11 jenny: I'm not understanding the "frames" discussion
21:33:26 PeggyG: amazing how KWL has stood the test of time for value in learning :-)
21:33:44 Gail Desler: @jenny - It's about kids thinking in frames as they create a multimedia piece - as opposed to the traditional writing process
21:34:09 jenny: Ohhhhhh - we've been playing with cartoons and NOW I see the connection
21:34:35 Gail Desler: Oh, wow, cartoons would be a perfect example!
21:34:36 SusanEttenheim: jenny - you're in the living room .. right?
21:34:40 jenny: It's amazing - my students didn't understand that you could create a cartoon with 1 frame, or 3 or 4
21:34:41 PeggyG: is it a storyboarding process?
21:34:42 SusanEttenheim: otherwise I could call you?
21:34:49 jenny: yes livving room, not alone
21:34:53 Ilka: I offer storyboards as an option for planning.  That has the kids thinking as a video with screens.  They like that.
21:34:59 SusanEttenheim: please speak up if you'd like me to call you in
21:35:06 SusanEttenheim: we love just bringing people in..
21:35:12 jenny: we've made some movies in 8 frames
21:35:55 SusanEttenheim: jenny how did you project relate to the frames being described here now?
21:35:59 Gail Desler: I think when you add to the storyboards (frames) the requirement that student identify the camera shots & angles, the students start to make some literacy jumps.
21:35:59 Ilka: For struggling students, there is a great cartoon app from Read/Write/Think.  The kids do the writing and the program makes the cartoon.
21:36:02 hickstro: Trying to summarize the frames:
21:36:04 SusanEttenheim: your frames...
21:36:07 hickstro: Inside writing...
21:36:20 hickstro: Responsive writing... describes collaboration among writers
21:36:28 SusanEttenheim: that sounds interesting ilka - link?
21:36:29 hickstro: Inside writing... internal writing process
21:36:38 Ilka: one sec...
21:36:41 PeggyG: I found their book on Amazon even cheaper than from the publisher :-) $23.39
21:37:01 hickstro: Stream is breaking... missing the frames discussion...
21:37:04 SusanEttenheim: thanks peggy!
21:37:05 hickstro: What are the four again?
21:37:22 SusanEttenheim: liz's stream does seem to be breaking up sometimes
21:37:42 ElyseEA: One way to think about the frames (theoretical frames) is that the affordances of digital writing support some approaches/mental operations that lead us to approach a writing task in certain ways.  These four are more like four typical 'stances' that we are in when we are writing with tech.
21:37:56 jenny: I think the cartoon, storyboard and movies relate to the frames idea with the editing, feedback and revision processes (maybe)
21:37:57 Ilka: Comic Creator http://www.readwritethink.org/files/resources/interactives/comic/
21:38:28 jenny: Sounds like I need to read the book
21:38:39 ElyseEA: Writing for frames or writing for the screen is also an important shift in the process, but not quite what they write about in the book
21:38:43 Ilka: Kids are exposed to so much media these days, they often think in sound bytes.
21:38:45 Wendy: I've also used toondoon.com for comic making. It's a "social" site where you can share them.
21:39:27 PeggyG: Comic Life is also a great tool both on computer and iPhone for creating comics
21:40:17 hickstro: Thanks, Elyse. Stances makes sense... what were the four again. Inside, responsive...
21:40:49 PeggyG: http://smeech-presos.wikispaces.com/Comic+Life This is a great site for explaining how Comic Life can be used for addressing NETS standards
21:41:25 jenny: You are a FONT of info tonight Peggy
21:41:28 Wendy: "this I believe:" the radio show has a Middle school and Upper school curric guide for essay/podcast writing.
21:41:58 Ilka: I do a similar thing with my 8th graders.  I teach the various forms of writing and let the students end the year with a digital movie project using their choiceof one of the modes.
21:42:02 PeggyG: I always get inspired by these conversations!!
21:42:16 Gail Desler: @PeggyG - Ton on content on this wiki, Peggy!
21:42:26 jenny: the after school teachers
21:43:10 ElyseEA: You can see a nice film by Joel on www.walkabout.posterous.com ... a blog where NWPers post about the events and places they visit.  Joel has a little film about attending a retreat in Arizona MLK weekend in January.
21:43:12 PeggyG: yes I love that wiki!!
21:43:14 Gail Desler: @Ilka Are their videos online?
21:43:36 Ilka: No.  My school won't allow me to post them. :(
21:43:37 ElyseEA: sorry...  www.nwpwalkabout.posterous.com
21:43:39 Gail Desler: @ElyseaEA OH, this is THAT Joel;-)
21:43:43 SusanEttenheim: thanks elyse!
21:43:47 hickstro: CVCV is an outstanding resource
21:44:06 jenny: I have a new principal this year - I do a LOT LESS VIDEO!  He's not very techno, but he thinks he is.
21:44:08 ElyseEA: Yeah -- THAT Joel  :D

21:48:08 SusanEttenheim: humm what is purposeful writing?
21:49:00 Ilka: There is always an audience.  I remind the kids that the teacher is their audience for academic writing.

21:51:41 SusanEttenheim: please do!
21:52:00 Ilka: So true, Paul.
21:52:31 Gail Desler: @Joel Am multi-tasking here - listening to your Prezi too
21:52:32 SusanEttenheim: ilka you must bring your earbuds next week!
21:52:41 Wendy: I use our clas blog for the thinking and ruminating--it's a big thing on the blog for us.
21:53:03 jenny: I think I disagree - I think kids are more likely to do the research and the thinking if they have tech tools
21:53:32 PeggyG: so true, Paul!! These fantastic FREE webcasts always cost me money buying the new books!
21:53:39 Joel Malley: @Gail...let me know if you have any questions...we presented together at NWP one year, right?
21:53:45 SusanEttenheim: haha me too peggy!
21:53:58 Gail Desler: @Joel - in NYC, right?
21:54:01 SusanEttenheim: how great!
21:54:02 Joel Malley: Yup
21:54:27 Ilka: A great thinking tool is OneLook Dictionary. http://www.onelook.com/reverse-dictionary.shtml Post a word and it spits back all these related topics.  Helps poor websearchers.
21:54:28 SusanEttenheim: I was only with you all for one evening.. but gail - was joel there?
21:54:37 sarabeauchamp-hicks: <it is incredibly difficult to listen to TTT and sit on the couch next to one of the speakers> Delay.
21:54:41 sarabeauchamp-hicks: :)
21:55:08 SusanEttenheim: sarah - in what way?
21:55:08 Gail Desler: @Susan & Joel - Oh wait, it might have been San Antonio

21:55:33 Joel Malley: so many NWPAM lol
21:55:52 Joel Malley: that emoticon mischaracterized my <lol>
21:55:57 hickstro: @Susan -- a pair of spouses on your show tonight :)
21:56:00 SusanEttenheim: sara - I can call you into the skype call if that would help
21:56:00 sarabeauchamp-hicks: @Susan :) not a big deal.  I could go in the other room! Good conversations!
21:56:03 Ilka: Preservice teachers are open to new ideas too.
21:56:11 SusanEttenheim: how true troy!
21:56:20 PeggyG: Yes Sarah! I've had that "echo" experience too!
21:56:26 jenny: old lady teachers are open to new ideas too!
21:56:37 SusanEttenheim: that's funny!
21:56:51 Ilka: LOL I'm one of those, but many aren't.  Kudos to you.
21:56:59 PeggyG: we are so privileged to be hearing from so many experts tonight!!
21:57:03 jenny: find their voice AND their audience!
21:57:25 SusanEttenheim: haha sarah - i just realized what you were saying...
21:57:38 hickstro: @Susan :)
21:57:38 SusanEttenheim: that's like when I test the stream and I hear double
21:57:41 Ilka: My students are always shocked when I tell them I didn't owrk on a computer until I was in college for the second time.  I typed my papers on a new-fangled technology called an electronic typewriter.
21:58:16 SusanEttenheim: ilka - I hand wrote mine because if I got good at typing, I just end up a secretary!
21:58:17 hickstro: @Ilka ... and, in a few months, they might be typing on that new-fangled iPad
21:58:23 jenny: We called it an "electric" typewriter
21:58:26 PeggyG: that was true for me too Ilka :-) I typed my doctoral dissertation on an electric typewriter--not fun!
21:58:28 Ilka: So true.
21:58:41 SusanEttenheim: I love showing videos to my 14 year olds done by 5 year olds!
21:58:56 jenny: and vice versa
21:58:57 SusanEttenheim: I love asking my high schoolers about their first computer memories
21:59:12 SusanEttenheim: and they don't go back all the way the way it does for little children now!
21:59:32 Ilka: Absolutely.  The kids make videos.  What I want to instill in them is the importance of plot in the "fun" videos they create.
21:59:33 SusanEttenheim: I just recently sold my manual typewriter..
22:00:11 PeggyG: @Susan--how funny! how much were you able to sell it for? :-)
22:00:12 SusanEttenheim: haah they don't have to do laundry and cool dinner...
22:00:30 jenny: I believe the Pew study said that the fastest growing group of internet users is 3-5 year olds
22:00:36 Ilka: I loved the show on gaming as a teaching tool.
22:00:46 SusanEttenheim: hum I don't remember peggy but a cute young woman bought it for her father in law to inspire him to get back to his writing!
22:00:52 Ilka: My daughter has been sufing the net since she was 3.
22:00:56 PeggyG: is a manual typewriter considered an "antique" ??
22:00:56 SusanEttenheim: that's great jenny!
22:01:50 sarabeauchamp-hicks: We have 5 little techies at the Hicks home!  From Google Docs to iPod touches--they love it.
22:01:52 SusanEttenheim: I don't think it was
22:02:02 SusanEttenheim: how old are they sarah?
22:02:03 hickstro: Is that the same Pew study that said that teens really don't like Twitter all that much?
22:02:15 sarabeauchamp-hicks: 4, 5, 6, 8 and 8 1/2 :)
22:02:19 PeggyG: my book is ordered and on it's way! can't wait to read it!!
22:02:23 SusanEttenheim: ilka I think there will be more about gaming because that's where we're headed now..
22:02:25 jenny: probably - I know it said students are doing LOTS of writing
22:02:26 SusanEttenheim: wow
22:02:28 SusanEttenheim: sara
22:02:57 jenny: Twitter's no fun unless you have interesting people to follow
22:03:00 hickstro: @Susan Indeed!
22:03:02 Ilka: Well, if you think about it, a well0designed game is a story with all the plot elements that Freytag would say was necessary.
22:03:03 PeggyG: the Horizon Report addresses gaming--it's definitely growing in importance in education
22:03:06 sarabeauchamp-hicks: Yes...wow is a good word.
22:03:13 SusanEttenheim: urgentevoke
22:03:35 hickstro: @jenny  Good point. Makes you wonder if FB is easier to use in the "following" sense, and maybe that is why they like it more
22:03:39 sarabeauchamp-hicks: They are all curious and full of inquiry.  I love the perspective they bring to technology use.
22:03:45 PeggyG: http://horizon.wiki.nmc.org/About+The+Horizon+Project
22:03:49 Ilka: Sara, how did you do 8 and 8 1/2???
22:04:08 hickstro: Twitter really makes you have to find people
22:04:23 jenny: FB is more frivolous - like teenagers
22:04:24 hickstro: @Ilka blended family!
22:04:24 SusanEttenheim: ah there's sooo much on twitter - I can't keep up!
22:04:28 sarabeauchamp-hicks: :) @Ilka Troy is laughing with me on the couch..blended family!

22:07:20 SusanEttenheim: thanks peggy!
22:07:34 Joel Malley: Let me also say that Paul Allison's tweets announcing the countdown to TTT are really helpful reminders
22:07:41 jenny: I'd like to talk about all these freakin' tabs I've got to look through!  This'll take another 4 snow days!
22:07:43 Ilka: 25 windows and still no crash. yay, me
