Peggy George
Hi Kathy and Carol :-)
Hi Peggy
And Hi to Cathy
So my question is, does Sal Kahn have anything good to offer that could be configured within a K12 MOOC>
10 hours ago
Oscar made a cool stop motion film of some lego chsracter seeking lobster as a reward after slaying a monster ;)
Peggy George
I haven't seen that! I'm sure it's amazing!
I was pleased to see Stephen Hurley share a new website for Canadian educators http://standingintheway.ca

yes, it was VA
Hi, folks ... sorry I was late ... crash and reboot :)
What if there was an ability to self select a MOOC in HS as an elective, an independent study.
Hi Jennifer
and John
Hi, Carol et al. ;)
Can't MOOCs be used to connect classrooms, objectives, cultures, etc.?
The problem is calling it a "MOOC". :)
@benjamin ... that is why I like you :)
From a US perspective, I'm wondering if a cMOOC may allow more flexibility for teachers to co-construct a course environment that is Common Core friendly.

Blended Learning
I agree @Benjamin
If folks do not think a MOOC is a K-12 model ... what could be done to prepare that demographic for a MOOC. or MOOC-like environment?
Why not a MOOC genius hour type class?
and Dave just skirted around a suggestion for that ...
What are the measures for whether or not it works?
Trying to figure out how a teacher can model self-directed learning for pupils to grasp making those connections but also, for the instructor, to cover everything else that matters for the assessments. Keeping in mind these assessment may not be cMOOC friendly depending on what Pearson has to say.
Peggy George
Verena Roberts created a "MOOC" for K12 but I think she decided to call it an open learning course rather than a MOOC.
Is a MOOC a sacred cow?
So if you teach an online class and you let anyone in, is it a MOOC? What if only 10 people show up?
So the expectation is to maintain enthusiasm for a finite period in a MOOC?
I like the concept of beginning and ending..
What is the "MOOC approach"?
Cool. Had never heard of Genius hour http://www.geniushour.com
9 hours ago
The "MOOC approach" to K-12 seems so vast.
@Dave I appreciate what you're saying, because it is exhausting to keep talking.
What do MOOCs accomplish?
Dave makes a good point that sustaining community beyond the defined timeframe is tough. Having a set start and end point makes sense.
How can it be quantified or qualified?
@Kathy ... that was kind of what I was asking Paul re: the desired "thing" to accomplish
9 hours ago
But what are the goals or outcomes? To connect with other students? Cultures? Instruction?
Peggy George
We had a great show on Classroom 2.0 LIVE with the Genius Hour team and the recording & tons of links are available on the Livebinder. http://live.classroom20.com/1/category/genius%20hour/1.html
9 hours ago
Yes @ Jennifer, how is that thing determined and by whom?
thanks @Peggy
Massive is scalable, no?
"Massive" takes the same structure but at different levels of involvement.
Does open just mean freely available to all people?
Like a fractal.
Open, for me, is in terms of degree (not all or nothing). Think Creative Commons, for example.
I have to admit I'm a MOOC drop out. I'll be trying another Coursera and this time I've got two friends in the mix. I think that will help me to stick with it.
This is why it's hard to define a "MOOC". :)
Peggy George
great point Kathy! that may make a big difference
9 hours ago
I hope so!
You don't need critical mass when talking MOOCs for K-12.
You are forcing students to participate in the "MOOC". It's not about numbers, IMHO.
Cathy Evanoff
There are some still people who can't always connect.
Imagine CKK08 applied to six year olds...:)
So, CCK08

Peggy George
Ben you should join the hangout :-)
Jen has a good point.
A MOOC has to be perceived as adding value, somehow add to your contacts, your knowledge and your ability to contribute.
Peggy George
this 30 minutes goes by toooooo fast!
Yes Peggy...very short indeed!
Do you think, @Paul that the idea for a student MOOC necessarily has to emanate from the students themselves?
This 30 min span has flown ... my, my ... and so much left unsaid :)
A Justin Bieber cohort!
Or a Miley Cyrus MOOC, that crosses many lines
9 hours ago
Just got the invite...
