2009-04-16 13:14:37 [Message] matt montagne -> -EdTechTalk: to me, the problem with school websites is that they've turned into nothing more than a digitized version of the three panel print brochure
2009-04-16 13:14:59 [Message] matt montagne -> -EdTechTalk: a school website can and should be much more than that...

2009-04-16 13:19:58 [Message] matt montagne -> -EdTechTalk: the school website can be an authentic publishing platform for student work...the website actually becomes a content aggregator...
2009-04-16 13:20:01 [Message] VinnieVrotny -> -EdTechTalk: Also using linked in
2009-04-16 13:20:09 [Message] William Stites -> -EdTechTalk: Not sure how LinkedIn plugs in
2009-04-16 13:20:44 [Message] arvind -> -EdTechTalk: talking about alums professional relationship to the school?
2009-04-16 13:20:45 [Message] alex.ragone -> -EdTechTalk: http://twitter.com/lausanneschool

2009-04-16 13:21:50 [Message] matt montagne -> -EdTechTalk: find out what alumni from your schools are blogging and showcase their content on the school website...another idea
2009-04-16 13:21:51 [Message] PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: very interesting comparison of Facebook and LinkedIn
2009-04-16 13:22:19 [Message] matt montagne -> -EdTechTalk: you gotta take a risk and try things with this...
2009-04-16 13:22:32 [Message] arvind -> -EdTechTalk: hi susan
2009-04-16 13:22:40 [Message] VinnieVrotny -> -EdTechTalk: hey susan
2009-04-16 13:22:44 [Message] William Stites -> -EdTechTalk: It's tough to convince people who are used to old ways to look at Social Media in a positive way so that it makes sense to them
2009-04-16 13:22:45 [Message] arvind -> -EdTechTalk: keep on mission when talking about social media - great point
2009-04-16 13:22:47 [Message] alex.ragone -> -EdTechTalk: Linked in: http://www.linkedin.com/companies/lausanne-collegiate-school?trk=ppro_cp...
2009-04-16 13:22:48 [Message] sarah H -> -EdTechTalk: Interesting comments on Linked In.  I don't login to my account there more than once a month I don't think
2009-04-16 13:22:55 [Message] arvind -> -EdTechTalk: we take "risks" every day, but we believe in them
2009-04-16 13:23:01 [Message] susan carter morgan -> -EdTechTalk: Hi Arvind, Vinnie
2009-04-16 13:23:11 [Message] sarah H -> -EdTechTalk: I wonder if I should re-think that.
2009-04-16 13:23:13 [Message] arvind -> -EdTechTalk: @sarah me either, but i do like it being a professional image of me
2009-04-16 13:23:18 [Message] angelamaiers -> -EdTechTalk: Great anaology!
2009-04-16 13:23:18 [Message] William Stites -> -EdTechTalk: It's about inproving communication and keeping people connected
2009-04-16 13:23:24 [Message] nycrican2 -> -EdTechTalk: I hardly use my L account at all.
2009-04-16 13:23:32 [Message] matt montagne -> -EdTechTalk: with social media there are unanticipated consequences/outcomes...some folks have a hard time with ambiguity
2009-04-16 13:23:52 [Message] arvind -> -EdTechTalk: joining groups has made me more likely to be a part of linked in - I joined my high school, college, grade school groups, ISTE, NY state indep school association, Nationl INdependent School Association, and some others
2009-04-16 13:23:58 [Message] PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: It's interesting to me to see the group LinkedIn and not an individual page. I have only used the individual page
2009-04-16 13:24:26 [Message] matt montagne -> -EdTechTalk: The YouTube channel is one of the best things a school can do right now on many different levels...it gets people comfortable with the web as a legit publishing platform for our learning communities
2009-04-16 13:24:53 [Message] arvind -> -EdTechTalk: Matt, what are you posting on the YouTube channel? Any concerns about student privacy?
2009-04-16 13:24:58 [Message] angelamaiers -> -EdTechTalk: @Matt- I totally agree! Would you suggest 1st Steps teacher tube?
2009-04-16 13:25:00 [Message] sarah H -> -EdTechTalk: I think of linked in as a place where all the lawyers hang out.  Looking around now.
2009-04-16 13:25:03 [Message] William Stites -> -EdTechTalk: How are you educating you administration and faculyt on the use of Social Media in school?
2009-04-16 13:25:07 [Message] matt montagne -> -EdTechTalk: I've head of postiiions within companies that are dedicated to managing social marketing
2009-04-16 13:25:23 [Message] sarah H -> -EdTechTalk: @Matt--I showed your page to several people at school--universal praise and "can we do that?"
2009-04-16 13:25:38 [Message] sarah H -> -EdTechTalk: You Tube
2009-04-16 13:25:38 [Message] arvind -> -EdTechTalk: Matt, give us the link! :)
2009-04-16 13:26:01 [Message] matt montagne -> -EdTechTalk: Arvind...student videos that they've posted (this is done through favorites), some student vids that have been directly uploaded, etc...it is just a prototype right now...I'll get the link
2009-04-16 13:26:42 [Message] matt montagne -> -EdTechTalk: cool Sarah..I hope it helps in some way
2009-04-16 13:26:46 [Message] susan carter morgan -> -EdTechTalk: We couldn't get our alums to visit our CMS alum page, but within minutes they joined the facebook group. We don't use it enough though.
2009-04-16 13:26:59 [Message] matt montagne -> -EdTechTalk: http://www.youtube.com/castischool
2009-04-16 13:27:04 [Message] PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: had a disconcerting experience with YouTube this week-a colleague uploaded her school video there and when it finished playing it brought up images of other videos, one of which was pure por*n! really surprised me!
2009-04-16 13:27:07 [Message] VinnieVrotny -> -EdTechTalk: It is ok to get "all marketing on us", Lorrie
2009-04-16 13:27:09 [Message] arvind -> -EdTechTalk: SCM, alum portals seem passe now, there is no incentive for them to keep coming back
2009-04-16 13:27:18 [Message] William Stites -> -EdTechTalk: Student voices in communications is the key to an authentic voice
2009-04-16 13:27:56 [Message] arvind -> -EdTechTalk: @PEggy - the "Related Videos" section of YouTube really bothers me. I wish I could turn it off sometimes. I always get into awkward situations when I use it with students. I still do it, and we discuss it, but it stinks
2009-04-16 13:28:11 [Message] matt montagne -> -EdTechTalk: @william...I agree...the student work is really the intersting thing about our schools
2009-04-16 13:28:18 [Message] susan carter morgan -> -EdTechTalk: Great point Lorrie. That's hard for lots of school folks to "get"
2009-04-16 13:28:20 [Message] PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: that was my concern arvind
2009-04-16 13:28:29 [Message] matt montagne -> -EdTechTalk: I'm actually thinking moodle can be a school website...
2009-04-16 13:28:36 [Message] matt montagne -> -EdTechTalk: a website doesn't need to be "pretty"
2009-04-16 13:28:40 [Message] arvind -> -EdTechTalk: @Peggy you just have to talk the kids through it, and let them know that it's not funny, but it is something we have t learn to navigate
2009-04-16 13:28:56 [Message] matt montagne -> -EdTechTalk: look at amazon's website...it is ugly...but people like it because it is social and useful
2009-04-16 13:29:02 [Message] PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: but it was posted on their district website and anyone could be viewing it--not just the kids
2009-04-16 13:29:05 [Message] sarah H -> -EdTechTalk: @Matt--also, we have to convince our parents to talk back to us on our websites.
2009-04-16 13:29:07 [Message] susan carter morgan -> -EdTechTalk: I thought I heard of a way to turn off the other videos?
2009-04-16 13:29:21 [Message] sarah H -> -EdTechTalk: If they are too pretty--it almost seems like grafitti maybe?
2009-04-16 13:29:28 [Message] PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: @susan--would love to know how to do that!
2009-04-16 13:29:31 [Message] arvind -> -EdTechTalk: this is a tough situation - my school is somewhat afraid of comments, but I like how Lorrie framed the discussion
2009-04-16 13:29:42 [Message] matt montagne -> -EdTechTalk: @susan...you can for embedded videos, but related vids can still rear their ugly heads
2009-04-16 13:29:56 [Message] matt montagne -> -EdTechTalk: good point, Arvind...
2009-04-16 13:30:37 [Message] matt montagne -> -EdTechTalk: @sarah...parents will talk back to us when they see student work...they won't when they see info about the annual fund.
2009-04-16 13:30:51 [Message] sarah H -> -EdTechTalk: I can get some parents to leave comments on the class wiki (away from the school site) but not on my "official" class page.
2009-04-16 13:31:18 [Message] PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: such great points Laurie is making! we need to be able to easily find the information we need when we go to a site. Amazon does a great job with that
2009-04-16 13:31:19 [Message] sarah H -> -EdTechTalk: @Matt--yep, that's the difference--the kids are helping build the wiki. My page has to be "approved" before anything goes on it.
2009-04-16 13:32:16 [Message] matt montagne -> -EdTechTalk: our basketball team has their own YouTube channel and it has been a big community builder for them
2009-04-16 13:32:50 [Message] PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: I definitely agree about the age point! I'm living proof :-)
2009-04-16 13:33:04 [Message] angelamaiers -> -EdTechTalk: @zappos did the same thing with shoes that had a scratch on them!
2009-04-16 13:33:10 [Message] alex.ragone -> -EdTechTalk: Hi Paige.  Welcome!
2009-04-16 13:33:19 [Message] matt montagne -> -EdTechTalk: our admin team has been all over the use of social media...I think they've gravitated toward it because they can actually get content...in a traditional website CMS model where there is a vetted workflow we've ended up not getting any content
2009-04-16 13:33:27 [Message] arvind -> -EdTechTalk: sarah "approval" is the enemy of blogging/wiki/twitter, isn't it? I know exactly what you're going through
2009-04-16 13:33:36 [Message] plennig -> -EdTechTalk: hey alex - sounds like a good discussion
2009-04-16 13:33:58 [Message] arvind -> -EdTechTalk: Matt, exactly! But I don't think my admin wants content, they want crafted content even though audience doesn't like that at all
2009-04-16 13:34:03 [Message] matt montagne -> -EdTechTalk: a vetted, traditional work flow will yield dull content
2009-04-16 13:34:09 [Message] susan carter morgan -> -EdTechTalk: For us it's not being nervous...it's them saying "lack of time" to explore. Always time, it seems
2009-04-16 13:34:45 [Message] matt montagne -> -EdTechTalk: @arvind...yep, I hear ya
2009-04-16 13:34:50 [Message] sarah H -> -EdTechTalk: I sent Lorri's blog to several at our school.  Twitter for Ind School fundraising
2009-04-16 13:34:52 [Message] sarah H -> -EdTechTalk: http://twittgroups.com/group/fundraisingforin
2009-04-16 13:34:55 [Message] arvind -> -EdTechTalk: We should post a Tweet from our school account saying, "If you DM us on Twitter, we'll give you your admissions results a day early" - see who digs that :)
2009-04-16 13:35:01 [Message] William Stites -> -EdTechTalk: If you are looking for crafted content you need to have a different conversation about SM. You need to understand what it's strengths are
2009-04-16 13:35:23 [Message] angelamaiers -> -EdTechTalk: That is so true- you can not fully understand until you have been in this space!
2009-04-16 13:35:30 [Message] pamfortin -> -EdTechTalk: Part of it for us too is lack of time to explore - but also getting people to see the hook
2009-04-16 13:35:32 [Message] matt montagne -> -EdTechTalk: If your school does have a youtube channel or other social media presence, be sure to friend other schools...there is strength in numbers
2009-04-16 13:35:34 [Message] plennig -> -EdTechTalk: i like what Lorrie was saying about the helicopter parents - i think we try so hard to keep them away but i think we need to give them an avenue to express what they want to express
2009-04-16 13:35:37 [Message] arvind -> -EdTechTalk: Twitter should be your professional place - working wonders for me!
2009-04-16 13:35:45 [Message] susan carter morgan -> -EdTechTalk: Great idea Arvind...I actually have a Board member following me on Twitter!
2009-04-16 13:35:45 [Message] PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: now that most of our local TV stations are using twitter on a daily basis many more people are becoming aware of it
2009-04-16 13:36:04 [Message] alex.ragone -> -EdTechTalk: http://www.edsocialmedia.com/
2009-04-16 13:36:04 [Message] angelamaiers -> -EdTechTalk: @arvind- Absolutely! Could not imagine my life- BT- before Twitter!
2009-04-16 13:36:09 [Message] William Stites -> -EdTechTalk: I look at Facebook as my personal space and Twitter as my professional space. I don't friend people on Facebook that I wouldn't want to see my life. Twitter is professional. But you have Fac pages or Groups for school
2009-04-16 13:36:16 [Message] William Stites -> -EdTechTalk: big difference in how you use it
2009-04-16 13:36:50 [Message] matt montagne -> -EdTechTalk: http://www.flickr.com/photos/menlophoto/
2009-04-16 13:36:53 [Message] sarah H -> -EdTechTalk: @William are you saying you wouldn't want to see any of *us* IRL?? ;)
2009-04-16 13:37:02 [Message] PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: those are really helpful suggestions for getting people started with social networking
2009-04-16 13:37:03 [Message] arvind -> -EdTechTalk: Bill, I agree, someone on Twitter said: "Facebook is for people I know, Twitter is for people I want to know"
2009-04-16 13:37:11 [Message] VinnieVrotny -> -EdTechTalk: Lorrie's blog - lorriejackson.com
2009-04-16 13:37:12 [Message] angelamaiers -> -EdTechTalk: Can you imagine if every day- teachers had time to read feeds, twitter, engage in social media networks, and then once a week share what they learned? And...it is FREE professional development!
2009-04-16 13:37:18 [Message] William Stites -> -EdTechTalk: Facebook has some rsik when you involve current students with faculty and images/content they may "stumble upon"
2009-04-16 13:37:19 [Message] arvind -> -EdTechTalk: Lorrie's blog: http://www.lorriejackson.com/
2009-04-16 13:37:20 [Message] alex.ragone -> -EdTechTalk: http://lorriej.wordpress.com/
2009-04-16 13:37:25 [Message] alex.ragone -> -EdTechTalk: arvind beat me!
2009-04-16 13:37:27 [Message] arvind -> -EdTechTalk: Vinnt beat me, but I beat Alex :)
2009-04-16 13:37:28 [Message] matt montagne -> -EdTechTalk: that is a link to a bay area independend  school who is usting flickr

2009-04-16 13:38:06 [Message] susan carter morgan -> -EdTechTalk: Does anyone else find the typing slow in this window? Or is it my computer? :)
2009-04-16 13:38:12 [Message] sarah H -> -EdTechTalk: RSS is a great way to help people get started, but it is lurker oriented.

2009-04-16 13:38:31 [Message] VinnieVrotny -> -EdTechTalk: Our admissions team is attending the "webinar" also
2009-04-16 13:38:31 [Message] William Stites -> -EdTechTalk: On Facebook I wouldn;t want to necessarily be "friends" with all the people I follow on Twitter. FB is for people that I know... Twitter is for those I  know and don't know that compliment my proffessional learning network
2009-04-16 13:38:36 [Message] PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: @susan--today typing is ok for me but last night I couldn't type at all!
2009-04-16 13:38:57 [Message] susan carter morgan -> -EdTechTalk: @william I tend to think of anything online as public. Someone once said when they walk away from the computer, it's their private life. I try to remember that.
