19:17:55 alicemercer -> Falling in love as a teenager was an intense experience, but I wouldn't want to delve to deeply back into that.

19:21:04 matt montagne -> go eeePC!!!
19:21:06 dougsymington -> Go John
19:21:11 sharonp -> @sendkathy - do you have your XOs yet? Found a great user manual online for them

19:22:13 matt montagne -> I'm with you on the eeePC doug...
19:22:16 courosa -> or runn Puppy Linux
19:22:21 dougsymington -> but you could have one in every room
19:22:24 alicemercer -> JS is right, and Dave is right
19:22:32 sharonp -> @sendkathy - don't have mine yet either - am borrowing one from where I work
19:22:33 matt montagne -> or end up in the landfill!!
19:22:41 Durff -> is dave being antagonistic again?
19:22:41 Alvin Trusty -> I run Freevo on a 1998 laptop... that's the size of a laptop
19:22:50 dave -> http://www.fromoldbooks.org/
19:22:53 dougsymington -> it's all on the web (or should be) anyway
19:22:56 alicemercer -> Can it run Flash? That is what you need.
19:22:58 loonyhiker -> 3 years ago all my computers were windows 3.1 aaargh
19:22:59 courosa -> or Dave, run thin client K12LTSP
19:23:01 JohnS -> Dave's like that.
19:23:03 alicemercer -> NOT productivity apps.
19:23:06 sendkathy -> @sharonp very frustrating, hope they come in before May 23 when the school year ends
19:23:11 matt montagne -> computer manufacturers need to start producing devices that last 5-8 years...not 2-3
19:23:16 alicemercer -> I want Flash, and once you get that, your good
19:23:23 sendkathy -> @sharonp, any more news on twb?
19:23:23 JohnS -> Yeah, thin client is also a possibility. I just haven't had a lot of success with it in the past.
19:23:24 alicemercer -> you're good, sorry
19:23:26 sharonp -> @sendkathy - how frustrating!
19:23:40 JenM -> Access Media Away From Home: http://www.cyberlinklive.com/
19:23:43 alicemercer -> @JS, will they run Flash apps?
19:23:49 courosa -> http://k12ltsp.org/mediawiki/index.php/Main_Page
19:23:51 cindyseibel -> @matt - not just the h/w - we're often driven by s/w changes (and expectations
19:23:58 dougsymington -> @alicemercer yes re flash
19:24:01 JohnS -> The eeepc does. I'm still downloading the others, so I haven't tried them yet.
19:24:12 James.Sigler -> @ JohnS I have played around with thin clients but haven't had much luck either
19:24:21 sharonp -> @sendkathy - yes, am meeting with South Africans in skype conference tomorrow - had a converasation today with a South African - have some big crazy ideas of what I want to do
19:24:29 JohnS -> I do think it's all about expectations
19:24:37 JL -> http://www.searchme.com/ Searchme, Inc.
19:24:50 matt montagne -> @cindy...agreed...but manfuactuers need to think of entire product life cycles in a radically different way (IMHO)
19:25:01 sendkathy -> @jeff I posted my what is ett

19:25:16 JL -> Thanks Cathy
19:25:25 alicemercer -> I'm spoiled, we now have a district license for kidspiration/inspiration
19:25:29 cindyseibel -> @matt oh yes.. unfortunately still driven by corporate in the edu space... until the eee came along
19:25:34 sendkathy -> I was going to do the VT but then I got carried away and it was way too long to read!
19:25:37 JohnS -> Beatles on iTunes: http://www.upi.com/NewsTrack/Entertainment/2008/03/08/mccartney_cashes_i...
19:25:50 matt montagne -> hooray for beatles on iTunes!!!
19:25:51 courosa -> you mean Michael Jackson signed the deal
19:25:57 matt montagne -> $2.99 a song??
19:25:59 Durff -> he wanted $$$
19:26:24 dave -> Creative
19:26:34 alicemercer -> Anyone else use Rhapsody yet?
19:26:43 dave -> http://www.creativedocs.net/
19:26:52 JohnS -> Kind of a big deal b/c there's been a long standing feud between Apple Corps (Beatles record company) and Apple Computer.
19:26:54 alicemercer -> I found more songs on it for xmas presents for DH
19:26:56 matt montagne -> is there a "Paint" like program for mac OS?
19:27:07 dougsymington -> funny, I use Paint nearly daily as well
19:27:19 alicemercer -> I use PaintShopPro more
19:27:21 matt montagne -> besides using gimpshop?
19:27:37 dougsymington -> the comparable app (to Paint) on the eeepc is fun too
19:27:37 alicemercer -> But some things in GIMP are better, I haven't gotten up to speed yet.
19:27:44 Alvin Trusty -> I'm still using PSP 3.12 every day.
19:27:46 matt montagne -> I wish there was a simple paint/draw progrram for mac...
19:27:48 JenM -> http://ap.google.com/article/ALeqM5ihhU7Nv2T3xNTLz3aernz_etPU3AD8V1H2RG0 ... and ... http://www.singlesexschools.org/home.php
19:27:51 alicemercer -> It is THAT phleghm time of year lord knows.
19:28:17 sendkathy -> allergy season!
19:28:20 courosa -> http://tuxpaint.org is cross platform
19:28:22 alicemercer -> I have a new student from tennessee, says "mam" alot, so quaint
19:28:36 James.Sigler -> I pity the boy's teacher
19:28:40 alicemercer -> @courosa, I dont' need cross platform.
19:28:49 matt montagne -> not a bad idea
19:28:55 alicemercer -> My sister did single sex hs and liked it.
19:28:59 courosa -> tuxpaint works fine on the mac matt
19:29:02 sendkathy -> I'm a fan of ss schools but I think it should be personal choice not mandatory
19:29:02 alicemercer -> OTOH...
19:29:08 loonyhiker -> how do we teach the kids to interact appropriately by keeping them separate?
19:29:08 sharonp -> studies have shown that coed is best.... but of course research can be interpreted both ways
19:29:26 cindyseibel -> does parent choice play here?
19:29:31 ffoxworth -> @alicemercer I'm from SC...we're all products of our culture, and the South definitely has a unique culture!
19:29:39 alicemercer -> You don't always learn social skills. LIke a straight friend went to single sex college, and hasn't enver learned to date effectively imho
19:29:42 James.Sigler -> I've tried it once in 6th grade. Great with girl. Trouble with boys.
19:29:44 sharonp -> it really depends on the student
19:29:49 sendkathy -> i attended a coed college and then a ss college and preferred ss, I was more focused on school during the day and fraternities during the evening!
19:29:50 loonyhiker -> i'm from SC too! we definitely have a unique culture! lol
19:29:50 Durff -> i thought that was only 8th and 9th graders that were doing better in single gender classrooms?
19:30:06 courosa -> social indoctrination
19:30:12 alicemercer -> Unique is the word
19:30:29 ffoxworth -> @loonyhiker Where do you hike?
19:30:32 courosa -> agreed
19:30:33 James.Sigler -> got to go eat supper
19:30:39 James.Sigler -> Night
19:30:44 dougsymington -> cya James
19:30:46 Durff -> enjoy
19:30:54 loonyhiker -> @ffoxworth SC, GA, NC, TN
19:30:59 kconger -> Born and raised in Tennesee myself. Manners used to be highly regarded...not so much any longer it seems.
19:31:08 Durff -> was jen a tomboy?
19:31:09 cindyseibel -> had same experience in IT - male-dominated field
19:31:10 PeggyG -> I've read a lot about single sex schools/classrooms and there are people who strongly defend both points of view--good/bad.
19:31:11 dougsymington -> how can it not turn into ghettoization?
19:31:18 JohnS -> Jen's still a tomboy
19:31:37 Durff -> i think we can make fun of people either way
19:31:39 courosa -> I had the dream internship, 8 intelligent grad 12 girls ... all went on to be lawyers, doctors, etc. .. amazing what can be done in a classroom without dating distractions
19:31:41 alicemercer -> Many in single sex college are gay, how does that affect them, lol? They aren't segregated from their objects of longing.
19:31:43 cindyseibel -> I agree - what's right for the learner
19:31:45 PeggyG -> I'm also aware of schools that have offered single sex classrooms at a certain grade level with parents making the choice
19:31:46 sharonp -> it really depends on the student - as I said before - frankly, for all three of my kids (coed) coed was best choice
19:31:48 matt montagne -> some of our classes are single sex in our middle school
19:31:50 sendkathy -> Jen, I agree
19:31:51 jolas -> my dd (14) thinks it would be good for science class.
19:31:53 sendkathy -> personal issue
19:32:25 alicemercer -> Yeah, Seperate but equal has rarely been equal?
19:32:25 Durff -> think a nerve was hit? chatroom flying
19:32:45 Gary -> Is this similar to single religious schools or a different topic?
19:32:48 JohnS -> Right. That's the point. The supreme court ruled that separate can't be equal
19:32:50 alicemercer -> Sister's high school did not have as much in science ed
19:32:52 PeggyG -> I don't think it's just about pouring in knowledge and keeping the kids focused. Some students blossom in single sex classrooms and participate/engage even more when they're not worried about impressing the opposite sex.
19:32:56 courosa -> @alice and i am not sure if it should be equal, but more distinct to needs
19:33:26 loonyhiker -> do boys learn woodworking and girls learn sewing? lol
19:33:35 alicemercer -> I have no firm, clear opinon, but a lot of random ideas to add, lol
19:33:37 JL -> http://edtechtalk.com/node/3056 What is EdTechTalk? Why do you participate?
19:33:42 sendkathy -> Some of us felt very sensitive about sexual harrassment from boys in elementary, middle and hs who frankly didn't know any better, still goes on, they copy their parents example. I see it all the time. Some handle it better than others. that's why i think it's a personal issue.
19:33:44 maureen -> Can web 2.0 tools, ie blogs, using moodle, etc. help the gender divide? I know some of our classes are boy-dominated- louder get more attention
19:33:46 JenM -> All the links for tonight's show are at http://del.icio.us/edtechtalk/20080316
19:33:54 alicemercer -> HEY, JL how about a VoiceThread for this topic, lol!
19:34:10 dave -> that lol was for you mercer
19:34:22 cindyseibel -> thanks very much! good night
19:34:23 sendkathy -> welcome
19:34:27 PeggyG -> So no show next Sunday?
19:34:29 sailsmart -> why would you have a different academic emphasis? I do believe the purpose is to encourage participation in young girls who may be overly preoccupied with appearance, self esteem issues instead of academics.
19:34:33 alicemercer -> Maureen, don't we need to figure out how to include our quieter students?
19:34:36 JohnS -> Children See, Children Do: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dO-IjmZae2I
19:34:41 alicemercer -> Girls, boys, langauge learners?
19:34:49 sendkathy -> so true
19:34:56 sendkathy -> monkey see monkey do
19:35:03 dougsymington -> @alicemercer that's what the backchannel should be used for -- voice inclusion
19:35:24 alicemercer -> Oh yeah, we have a girl in kinder talking about mommy and step dad's sex practices
19:35:25 courosa -> i used the video a couple of times this week, good response from audience
19:35:29 sendkathy -> so true
19:35:30 loonyhiker -> thanks y'all
19:35:32 maureen -> @alicemercer yes, but I know that when you also give kids the opportunity to comment online you sometimes hear different voices than in the classroom
19:35:39 PeggyG -> Thanks! Got the juices flowing! See you in 2 weeks
19:35:41 jolas -> 1st time here, I have been missing out. Thank-you!
19:35:43 alicemercer -> @maureen YES!
19:35:44 JohnS -> Skype jschinker
19:35:54 alicemercer -> That's what happened with podcasting for me
19:35:54 sendkathy -> you can always hear when a parents voice comes from a child's mouth
19:36:00 sendkathy -> thx
19:36:03 sailsmart -> thanks bye
19:36:04 loonyhiker -> my daughter learned to "shoot a bird" from my hubby lol

19:36:43 alicemercer -> No for the comments on Same Sex Schools!
19:36:48 PeggyG -> Can you give the VT link again for the comments?
19:37:05 alicemercer -> That's what I meant, since he always wants to set up a VT. I thought I was the VT queen
19:37:08 sendkathy -> I know jen doesn't care for VT
19:37:17 sendkathy -> no one has posted I just checked
19:37:22 Durff -> go alice!
19:37:22 alicemercer -> Yeah, well it' has it's place!
19:37:33 Durff -> hi cheryl

19:37:42 lee baber -> grand news
19:37:44 cherylsweb20 -> hello
19:37:49 JenM -> VT is nice, but I hate the requirement for registration :(
19:37:50 alicemercer -> What was that one tools where folks would leave audio comments?
19:37:54 sendkathy -> ooo gotta go get my pizza! bye all
19:38:05 alicemercer -> JM: you can create sub identities
19:38:23 Durff -> in VT
19:38:23 alicemercer -> You want me to call?
19:38:25 PeggyG -> create sub identities on VT
19:38:33 dougsymington -> gotta run crew

19:39:11 dougsymington -> talk to you all soon--yes, Happy Easter all
19:39:12 maureen -> VT create different IDs for all the kids
19:39:16 Durff -> i did not criticise you VT
19:39:30 Durff -> that was Alice
19:39:32 dougsymington -> check out the VT on the Earth Day wiki too
19:41:48 maureen -> @alicemercer can you create folders for these IDs, I have 7 classes of kids on VT- makes me and them nuts finding their IDs
19:42:22 Durff -> i make mine use my id on vt - easier for us
19:42:35 Durff -> only one mic anyway
19:42:59 maureen -> @durff they like their little avatars, one mic
19:43:15 alicemercer -> Hey, I'm guessing you all talked about the the mini-Legends earlier?
19:43:39 Durff -> we created avatars on portrait illustrator
19:43:51 alicemercer -> @maureen, REALLY? Darn! I asked VT about creating seperate classes, but they didn't mention that
19:44:02 alicemercer -> @Durff: remember NO cigarettes!
19:44:11 Durff -> on not on vt alice
19:44:33 Durff -> it was a lollypop
19:45:22 Durff -> quicktime still not working but says negotiating now surely this is progress
19:45:23 maureen -> @alicenercer- no I have all 100+ identities under my name and we switch when we switch kids- pain
19:45:40 Durff -> ooo it works!
19:45:45 Durff -> loudly
19:46:03 alicemercer -> @maureen, I have seperate logins for each grade levels, but I create the VT on my teacher account
19:46:07 PeggyG -> Parents as Partners is off to a great start! Really enjoy participating-Joyce Epstein was fantastic!
19:46:17 JenM -> Tom out of the closet ... muting my mic ... :)
19:46:17 alicemercer -> So I don't run into the limits on # of VT
19:46:30 alicemercer -> Alternating with It's Elementary!
19:46:31 Durff -> hi tom
19:46:48 JenM -> hi, back to Durff ;)
19:46:52 Durff -> ooo realplayer working now
19:46:53 alicemercer -> Tell them they are welcome Matt to hear about what kids can learn
19:47:25 alicemercer -> @maureen, did that make sense about VT?
19:47:36 Durff -> hmm i wonder if someone's grandkids were visiting upstairs and using up all the bandwidth?
19:47:58 alicemercer -> Hey CathyE I was sharing issue with Portrait Illustrator.
19:48:03 JenM -> hi, CathyE!
19:48:08 PeggyG -> Matt-I think that gradual approach to bringing in parents to other venues makes a lot of sense.
19:48:08 JenM -> just in time :)
19:48:10 alicemercer -> The cigarette accessry
19:48:20 maureen -> @alicemercer haven't run into limits yet... I have the one teacher account to log in and then all the kids with photos or first names/no photo
19:48:27 Cathy e -> Hello All - I've missed ya!
19:48:40 Durff -> okay, clicking media player is not a good idea
19:48:46 Durff -> hi cathy
19:48:51 Durff -> where you been?
19:48:56 alicemercer -> Not limits on identities, but on VTs. If it's not a teacher account, you are limited to the number of VTs
19:49:15 Durff -> i don't know
19:49:16 alicemercer -> But it's easier to have a seperate login for each grade level.
19:49:22 JenM -> how many are eating corned beef and cabbage?
19:49:28 Durff -> i had mine before all those changes
19:49:38 JohnS -> Irish ale? does that count?
19:49:45 maureen -> OK I guess I have solved the limit problem and created an identity problem with the way I do it
19:49:53 Durff -> green shakes?
19:50:09 JenM -> yum ... tom slow cooked the CB and cabbage all day ... yummy!
19:50:27 Durff -> did they make my VT an educator account for me?
19:50:50 Durff -> grandfather me in so to speak?
19:50:51 alicemercer -> @Maureen yes.
19:50:52 JohnS -> I forgot about the green shakes! I need to get one this week.
19:51:02 JenM -> Irish soda bread, too ...
19:51:23 alicemercer -> @maureen, but if you create a seperate login for each grade or class, then you keep the ids cleaner.
19:51:43 maureen -> @durff I think you have to ask- hit the go pro button then the k-12
19:51:49 alicemercer -> @maureen, then just make the VT under your teacher login
19:51:50 Durff -> ok
19:52:07 maureen -> @alicemercer you're right
19:52:30 alicemercer -> @maureen, well not RIGHT, but one way to handle it
19:52:51 JL -> http://enviroscims.wikispaces.com/Earth+Day
19:53:14 JL -> http://enviroscims.wikispaces.com/earthcast08+VoiceThread
19:54:30 Durff -> thinking of Al Upton
19:54:42 Durff -> in NZ or Australia?
19:54:52 Durff -> alice would know
19:55:00 lindanitsche -> Australia
19:55:08 alicemercer -> Any place but I know Australia is a center of that
19:55:33 Durff -> see i knew other people would know
19:56:51 lindanitsche -> I am hopeful that he is able to have a conversation about the situation rather than the Big Brother type of response he has had
19:57:02 matt montagne -> thanks for plugging everyone!
19:58:10 JenM -> Alice :)
19:58:28 Durff -> bye!
19:59:13 JenM -> Make your own ETW via VoiceThread :)
