Teachers Teaching Teachers #224 - Students and Rick West help us build community - 10.27.10

Post-Show description:
It’s student night again on this episode of Teachers Teaching Teachers. We hope you enjoy this student-sponsored discussion about what they can do themselves to nurture a community of learners online. Susan Ettenheim’s students asked to come on the show:
My students are interested in hosting a conversation about digital photography in Youth Voices and Voices on the Gulf. What do students want in terms of collaboration? What will make it compelling? What do they want to share? This is not so much a matter of someone sharing his or her work as much as the students planning alongside and with us.
Chris Sloan’s digital photographers joined as well. Chris writes: “I like Susan’s wording – students “planning alongside” the teachers. I look forward to a conversation like this, and at least one of my students says she can join us.”

We were also joined by another guest who Chris suggested, Richard E. West:

I just read “A Student’s Guide to Strengthening an Online Community,” by Richard E. West (TechTrends, Sept./Oct. 2010), which seems pertinent to what we’re thinking for this Wednesday.  West starts off saying that students today know how to FaceBook but that doesn’t always help in online learning communities.  Students need guidance in learning how to learn online. One of the things we’re asking students to do is to help us create/maintain a good online learning community (OLC) of photographers.

We asked Rick West to join the students on this episode of Teachers Teaching Teachers. We hope you will join us every Wednesday at 6:00 PM Pacific / 9:00 PM Eastern. AND if you have any Skype-ready student photographers who might want to join us, please let us know!

21:13:22 SusanEttenheim: great
21:13:28 SusanEttenheim: jake and madison can you hear now?
21:16:13 Paul Allison: http://youthvoices.net/video-gallery
21:16:59 PeggyG: it may be the skype connection-you sound great now Annie!
21:17:33 PeggyG: that's an interesting distinction-community vs network
21:17:43 PeggyG: I kind of thought of them as the same thing
21:18:56 SusanEttenheim: jake are you there?
21:19:03 SusanEttenheim: can you hear?
21:19:54 PeggyG: is one of the questions you're asking whether youth voices can become more of a community or are you thinking it would happen better somewhere else?
21:20:16 PeggyG: a sub group on youthvoices?
21:20:40 PeggyG: photography is such a big topic!
21:22:51 SusanEttenheim: it is!
21:22:58 SusanEttenheim: and so is online learning.. right peggy?
21:23:26 SusanEttenheim: hi xiaoyumin welcome
21:23:35 SusanEttenheim: where and what do you teach or go to school?
21:23:54 PeggyG: exactly!
21:24:08 xiaoyumin: Thank you! I'm working in East China Normal Unversity in China
21:24:14 SusanEttenheim: welcome!
21:24:28 PeggyG: photos can provide such strong emotional connections-saw an excellent demonstration of that this afternoon in a webinar
21:24:30 SusanEttenheim: are you studying or teaching or both?
21:24:43 xiaoyumin: Now I'm a visiting scholar in Columbia Unversity
21:24:54 SusanEttenheim: ahh so you're in NYC!
21:25:09 PeggyG: she first showed us a slide that was all text about statistic re Haiti; then she showed a series of powerful photos with one statistic with each photo. It was really powerful!
21:26:11 xiaoyumin: Sorry for being late. This is first time, I just have a try
21:26:27 SusanEttenheim: glad you could join us!
21:26:46 PeggyG: it seems like more community can be built when you communcate about how the photos make you feel (in addition to talking about the photo techniques which comes with a photo course)
21:27:07 SusanEttenheim: how true peggy
21:27:40 Chris Sloan: Here's the link to the Youth Voices Flickr gallery  http://www.flickr.com/groups/youthvoices/
21:28:09 xiaoyumin: Thank you! I'd like to watch
21:28:18 PeggyG: wow! the photo collection has really grown!!! is everything licensed with creative commons?
21:28:39 SusanEttenheim: we would love to have some students adding photographs from China.. could you help us make some connections?
21:30:29 PeggyG: I can understand why someone would want their photos to speak for themselves but wouldn't you want to know what other people think they are saying? that's where the conversation and connections come from
21:31:07 PeggyG: I agree! I want to hear what they were thinking when they took the photo :-)
21:31:48 xiaoyumin: I'm not sure if flickr is easy to access there, sometimes these websites are very slowly in China. But  I wiil suggest them to have a look at yours and then hope them to be intersted in it
21:31:49 Rick West: If you just want the artwork to speak for itself, is that the same as just visiting an online gallery? visiting a museum?
21:32:24 PeggyG: yes Rick--and talking to yourself :-)
21:33:21 xiaoyumin: Sorry , since my English is limited, I have to spend more time to catch what you are talking
21:33:37 PeggyG: you're doing great xiaoyumin!!
21:33:38 SusanEttenheim: no problem - glad you are here!
21:33:47 PeggyG: feel free to ask questions
21:34:06 PeggyG: I loved seeing the Main Streets everywhere!
21:34:33 PeggyG: does the magazine have a theme?
21:35:07 PeggyG: nice title
21:36:03 xiaoyumin: I love those pictures. I will send the address to some students who like taking pictures and share with others
21:36:23 PeggyG: that would be wonderful xiaoyumin!
21:36:41 PeggyG: just seeing the other photos will give them ideas of things they could take pictures of
21:36:51 Chris Sloan: She's talking about a MagCloud photo magazine  http://www.magcloud.com/
21:37:18 PeggyG: aha! so you create it online and then you can publish it
21:38:05 SusanEttenheim: welcome back jake can you hear?
21:38:07 PeggyG: can you comment on the photos online on magcloud?
21:38:23 SusanEttenheim: goood question peggy!
21:39:30 PeggyG: and there's both text and phtos in the magazine?
21:40:35 PeggyG: it says you can upload from flickr--that would give you a fantastic source of images if you use the youthvoices flickr collection
21:42:03 PeggyG: it doesn't seem to have a blog-like communication process--you can send messages to the publisher and follow them but you wouldn't see other people's comments
21:42:56 PeggyG: wonderful idea!
21:43:24 PeggyG: you could have some great conversations in youthvoices about which pictures belong together in the magazine
21:44:09 xiaoyumin: Great idea of magazine
21:44:11 Chris Sloan: great idea, Peggy
21:44:35 Chris Sloan: xiaoyumin, do you think some students from China might be interested?
21:44:37 SusanEttenheim: do you know some students in China who might participate and share photos from China?
21:44:49 PeggyG: it seems like that kind of conversation would be really fun and interesting--people would have to say what they see in the photo and why it connects with another photo :-)
21:46:05 PeggyG: that makes a lot of sense! start small and then expand
21:46:26 xiaoyumin: Actually since digital camera is popular now, many students like taking pictures. But I'm not sure who like to share them as what you are doing
21:46:43 PeggyG: what was in that magazine? writing? photos?
21:46:48 SusanEttenheim: we would like to see and meet students in China!
21:46:51 Chris Sloan: photos and writing
21:47:01 SusanEttenheim: yes the magazine was writing and pictures..
21:47:03 PeggyG: need instant replay :-)
21:47:05 SusanEttenheim: yes
21:47:09 xiaoyumin: I'll try to ask
21:47:17 SusanEttenheim: thank you!
21:47:44 SusanEttenheim: welcome back jake
21:47:48 SusanEttenheim: can you hear the audio?
21:49:15 xiaoyumin: I put the address in my google bookmark and will share with other teachers and students
21:49:23 SusanEttenheim: wonderful
21:49:54 PeggyG: you can actually comment directly on the flickr photos in the collection, right?
21:51:45 Chris Sloan: xiaoyumin, we once had a school participate in Youth Voices from China.
21:52:09 Chris Sloan: from Shanghai
21:52:55 xiaoyumin: Oh, do you know the school name?I'm from Shanghai, too.
21:54:11 Chris Sloan: Shanghai Community International School (SCIS)
21:54:33 PeggyG: http://www.magcloud.com/browse/Issue/120103 this is an interesting example of a magazine on magcloud with photos and text
21:54:54 PeggyG: you can see all of the pages in a popup preview
21:55:21 Chris Sloan: Thanks Peggy.  That's a good model.
21:55:42 Rick West: Looks like a pretty cool site!
21:56:16 PeggyG: would you be wanting to see your magazine?
21:57:57 PeggyG: sell not see sorry!
21:59:07 PeggyG: what if you used that conversation about the photos on youthvoices to help you select photos that could be published in a magazine featuring youthvoices photographers/writers?
21:59:52 xiaoyumin: It's an international school
22:00:18 xiaoyumin: many children from abroad
22:00:50 xiaoyumin: They don't have language problem
22:02:26 xiaoyumin: http://www.haokanbu.com/ we have this in China, for pictures and stories
22:02:31 Davidpulling: Bonsoir, everyone.  I enjoyed eavesdropping on the conversations.
22:02:49 SusanEttenheim: night david ... can we get your students to contribute photos too??
22:03:30 xiaoyumin: many teachers and students write their story on it
22:03:38 PeggyG: interesting site xiaoyumin! is that like flickr? is that photos from everyone or does the album come from one person? can't read the text :-)
22:03:42 xiaoyumin: bye
22:03:45 Davidpulling: Maybe so, and I hope so--They'll want instructions
22:03:47 Paul Allison: Those I-search projects look cool.
22:04:13 Davidpulling: Thanks, Paul.  We're hitting the library in class tomorrow for the first time.
22:04:14 xiaoyumin: similar to flickr
22:04:37 xiaoyumin: sorry, I have to stop, bye
22:05:12 PeggyG: here's the google translation of that site: http://translate.google.com/translate?js=n&prev=_t&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&layout...
22:05:27 Chris Sloan: Thanks again Peggy
22:05:41 PeggyG: thank you for another great conversation! the students are very inspiring!
22:05:56 PeggyG: good night everyone!
22:06:05 SusanEttenheim: night everyone thank you!
